If I Raid 1 an SSD and a HDD, will I be limited by the HDDs lower speeds?

Lets say I want redundancy but wants to save a bit of money. Will the SSD be hamstrung by being raided to a HDD?

Yes. In any sane RAID-implementation, a mirrored write is not considered complete until it's been written on all the devices in the RAID, ie. after finishing writing on the SSD, it'll stop and wait until the writes on the HDD are also finished.

I thought the drives had to be identical

No, they don't; it'll only use as much space on any drive in a RAID1-array as there is on the smallest one, like e.g. if you have a 1TB and 2TB drive in a RAID1, it'll behave as if both drives were 1TB.

Reading: With Read Balancing, it is possible to gain speed.

It depends.

In some cases you want different drives though the same Capacity.

As it is said that the same drives have the same weakpoints, you sometimes go to different drives from different manufacturers to mitigate this issue.

 

Though when a Drive fails, you'd better make a Backup of the RAID Array and not rebuild it as I've heard many times that another Drive died while doing the rebuild...
