Pros & Cons of buying a GPU that was used for mining

I’m posting this here primarily because I don’t know the cons of buying a gpu that was used for mining besides obviously it might not work, but I wanted to know more technical issues that would cause it to not work, and what specifically is the most risky about buy gpu that was used for mining. The pros that I see from buying a gpu that was used for mining is you can get it cheaper. Which is very helpful for people who don’t have that much money to throw at brand new graphics cards. I’m looking to upgrade my graphics card but not break the bank. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Buying used graphics cards is a great way to save money, but you need to be a little careful, which ones you buy.

Buying a GC that was used for mining can have the cons, that it might not have been cooled well enough since they are you usually crammed together wit ha lot of other cards generating a lot of heat.

If GCs are exposed to a greater amount of heat for a prolonged the transistors and overall the material can fade and break more easily after just a few more months under normal conditions.

As long as it's been in an environment with proper cooling, I don't see why there would be anything wrong with the card. It's meant to last years under stress.

Pros : Cheap(er) of course...

Cons : 24-7 operations, component may deteriorate faster than normal use.

Get whatever still have warranty. Some cards have 3 years warranty. So some mining cards still have a year or two left.

You can RMA if you feel that the card is not performing well.

I can't add anything from what you said.

I'd buy a refurbished GPU or from normal usage though, my experience was bad buying a used mining GPU.

It's a gamble, if you're lucky enough you can get one from a good owner (proper cooling, not/mildly OC'd). Ask the seller more about the condition of the card.

GPU is designed to last, but constant abuse can shorten its lifespan.
