The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been working with Audi to develop in-car entertainment and information systems based on Android—and the pair plan to make an announcement at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The newspaper explains that the announcement will also detail collaborative efforts with other manufacturers—it specifically names Nvidia, for instance—in order to "establish Android as an important technology for future vehicles." According to the Journal's sources, the new Android initiative will "allow drivers and passengers to access music, navigation, apps and services that are similar to those widely available now on Android-powered smartphones."

Last June at its 2013 developers conference, Apple announced its plans to integrate iOS into the car dash, and has garnered support from BMW, Mercedez-Benz, GM and Honda in the process. A rumor that Google is playing catch-up, then, is hardly surprising. There are few further details in the Journal article, though, so we'll have to wait and see just how much water this story holds.

My opinion:

It's interesting to see both Google and Apple doing this with several different car manufacturers. I can understand why they're doing it but I thinks it's going a little too far having an information system (As in full internet) in your car.

So, what is your opinion?

"You Can't Buy Happiness, But You Can Buy Horsepower, And That's Kind of The Same Thing."

good so much better then these cars custom os that are balls and run terribly and laggy but android better be putting in something nice for audio for them to choose it over apple.

Interesting idea, but what if I want to pair my Android phone and the car comes with the iOs version? They'd have to allow it. I can't see Apple being happy about that, but I highly doubt a car company would risk losing sales because someone's phone doesn't sync with the car.

Likewise, I wouldn't want Google to have me log in every time I'm in the car. You know they would, even if it did it automatically.
I bet they were sitting around one day and thought "hmm, how can we track people's movements even more?".

Well considering Android has a lot of security loopholes that Google cannot be bothered to fix, no thanks. I'd rather not have someone hack my car and steer me into a wall or make me run over a pedestrian. I'll just stick to Android on my phone where it can do no harm.

if they find a way to get this into an Audi R8 I am so sold it's not even funny.

This is good news, the interior of an Audi is already of high quality.

Yes! Finally some big company decided to do this!

I always feel sad whenever I look at the dashboard display computers due to their low resolution and usually convoluted and confusing system UI, and I've always been telling people that they should just put android with a decent quality screen on there. Hopefully this will leak into other car manufactuerers, and eventually trickle down into the more affordable section of cars.

I figured no one ever did this because it was too expensive for the R&D to develop an android build custom for a car. Though I've never had any experience, so I wouldnt know how difficult it is or not.
