ubuntu not installing on ssd from usb

i have a bootable copy of ubuntu on a usb which i used to access my new ssd format it correctly then install ubuntu.

i clicked through all the steps selecting any settings i wanted and selecting the correct partition on the ssd then... nothing.

it says its installed but when i restart having unplugged the usb and trying to boot from the sdd. it says that i need to reboot as there is no os on the ssd.

any ideas, am i messing up something common. if you need any more info i'm happy to supply

check what device it installs the boot loader to.

EDIT: also, are you using uefi or legacy mode to install?

Did you let the setup configure partitions automatically, or did you do it manually?

all i did was format it as a single partition then when it got to installation type i selected somethign else then the ssd

That's not going to work on a UEFI BIOS. UEFI needs a separate UEFI-partition for the bootloader-stuff.

ok, just select erase disk and install ubuntu and it should reformat it and configure the correct partition layout itself...

I agree, this is by far the easiest method.

it shouldn't. it tells you which device it's going to use before it installs.

but unplugging the oither drives when installing an OS is always recommended, because you don't wanna make mistakes...
