Newbie here. both on building pc's and.im this forum as well. Need advise and Help about OVERCLOCKING

Hi guys. Hope someone can help me. I am currently trying to build my own pc. Im just trying to find out what is the best set up for me.soo.

Is it worth it to build a pc overclock ready?

I will mainly use it for gaming. NBA 2ks and RPG games like watchdogs,tomb raiders,shadow of war etc.

 

if I will overclock, I'll buy i5 6600k, if I wont, i will go with i5 8400.

 

GPU on hand is

asus rx580 T8G

Depends on the overclock. If you're only getting 4.1 or so, the 8400 will do better than it. If you've got a better overclock planned, then you'd see an improvement.

you do know that those two cpus that you said are from completely different generations right? anyways whats your budget and it is only going to be used for gaming??

Thanks for the reply . Well . I havent tried overclocking a PC so I dont have any plans. is there any point into overclocking the CPU for gaming if I have 8gb of GPU already?

What's your budget, country and what parts do you already have? Does "on hand" mean you already have the GPU or you are going to buy it?

You've got to decide if overclocking is worth it for you. There's risks involved, but, honestly, with how robust components have become, and how much "official" support there is for overclocking now-a-days (I.E. the very existence of K models and overclocking software for GPU's as two examples) the benefits really outweigh the risk.

How well you'll be able to overclock may be beyond your control, though. I run my 4790k at stock as I lost on the silicon lottery gamble. I can't get much over 100mhz and keep it stable.

To me, an i5-8400 stock is better than an overclocked 6600K. The extra cores help a lot.

yeah I know of course . but one is unlock and the other is not...and yes, for gaming and basic surfing

8400 has 6 cores while 6600k only has 4... I dont care if you're good at overclocking skylake to 5ghz (which is difficult), the 8400 is still the better deal

Yes, it can definitely improve performance.

For games that rely more heavily on CPU interaction, yes, you'll see more improvement there than you will on an overclock for a GPU.

That said, many (not all) modern games rely more heavily on your GPU. You'll see an improvement with a good boost to your CPU, either way, though. How much it relies on one vs. the other though, will determine the impact on improvement.

What's your budget, and are you buying new or used? If you're buying a 6600k I'm assuming it's used?

I assume they are about the same. OP wont be comparing the two if one's like $175 and the other $250.

I just want to make this extremely clear, since you said you are new to building pc's. I know that @xdeathshot20 already mentioned they're from different generations, but, the i5 6600k will only work in Z170 and updated Z270 motherboards, an i5 8400 will only work in Z370 motherboards.

If he goes used, the cheapest 6600k on ebay is $154. So that's $24 difference compared to $178 for the i5-8400.

Unless he has some deal on craigslist for like $130 or something insane like that

If you're looking at singles, sure. eBay is also a horrible place to try to find computer parts most the time, unless you're willing to spend a couple weeks waiting out auctions.

For example, I got my 7600k, 16GB of RAM, Z270 motherboard, and 256GB SSD for $200.

Your "example" is very lucky. Also, I wouldn't do anything involving auctions as people can just snipe it quite literally last second and dramatically raise the price

Not really. I'd watched several similar deals go through before snagging that one.

Yup, that's what you have to do. It's not hard. That's how you save money. It's very little effort for the amount of savings to be had.
