is it true that elon musk is working on providing the fastest internet speed to everyone?

saif96

i have been hearing that elon musk is planning on providing everyone with the fastest internet to everyone by sending a satellite, with about 1000gb internet speed i think? by doing that everyone would be getting 1ping when gaming online thats really amazing if it happen is this true? if so any ideas when this would be completed?

and if it did happen what would happen to our internet providers like at&t and others? would they also alot of customers? i really hope so

Well he did move the stagnant car industry forward and he did make reusable rockets an actual feasible thing

Is providing means "free" here????

I don't really go up-to-date with Elon Musk's news, I just keep checking on Tesla, that's all. Also the cave incident.

Yeah, of course, I'll be super skeptical if Elon provides the internet for free lol :P

I wish providing meant sharing it for free.

That's not how ping works. "ping" is a measure of latency of the signal travelling from your computer to the destination (another computer or server).

Connecting to a satellite introduces a lot of latency as the satellite is physically far away. A geostationary orbit that telecommunication satellites use is at around 35,000 kilometres above the earth. For example, the "Sky Muster" satellite that is used for providing satellite internet to remote areas in Australia is positioned at 35,786km above the Earth.

Quote

Sky Muster I operates in geostationary orbit of 140° East. Its orbital position is 35,786 kilometres (22,236 mi) at the equator, north of Australia.[10] Sky Muster I became operational in April 2016.[11]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Muster

For the light signal to travel to the satellite and back is a trip of 70,000km. Light travels at almost 300,000KM/s, so that means it will take about 250ms for light to travel from the ground, to the satellite, and then back down to the ground again. From there it still needs to be directed through the normal internet infrastructure of undersea cables, exchanges, and servers. This means that with a satellite network (in a geostationary orbit) you're looking at minimum 300ms ping.

Relatively high download speeds can still be delivered over a satellite network, as while it the trip is long and slow, they are able to send large packets of data at a time.

There are other alternatives, such as using a low Earth orbiting satellite, which is physically closer to the Earth, however there are other issues faced with those. There was also a plan by Facebook(?) a while back to launch a bunch of balloons and/or drones that would float around and provide internet access.

If you're going to call him out on these "shit projects" at least name them.... Just don't insult him. He's probably done more than any of us could accomplish.

Yep, we all have projects. We sometimes even fail small projects, he's just being a risk taker. We aren't perfect, not everything may go as we wish. But at least he's willing to take much bigger risks. He's ambitious, without ambitious people we might progress slowly or not at all.

To be honest I'm a bit reluctant to change, I barely adapt to some of his projects (like EVs, etc.), but I can see his points. I respect him, but I don't worship him like some people do.

so you're going to discredit everything he's done because of a few failed projects?....that's pretty dumb.
