Upgrading CPU (G4560)

Hello,

I have been using the G4560 well for over 6 months now, and now I'm in a better financial shape so I think it's time for an upgrade!

I would like to know if you guys have any suggestion regarding CPU upgrade (I'm looking into i5 7500 and i7 7700) and what problems I might encounter while replacing the cpu? What would be good to have or to know before I start swamping them! (Besides Thermal paste, maybe a new copy of windows? how do OEM licenses work? etc?)

Thank you before hand!

You don't need to do anything else other than swap the CPUs if using the same motherboard.... no need to re-install windows or anything.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

get a top end i3 or a low end i5 there is a cooler that comes with the processors with thermal paste preapplied. you just need some microfiber with some rubbing alchol. i would get a i3-7320 or a i3-7300 and another stick of ram instead of a i5. Consider buying a i3-8100 and a new mobo instead of buying a i5 7th gen as they are worse and a b360 mobo allows you to upgrade to 8th gen i7 in the future. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-8100-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7400/3942vs3886

Note: if you have a micro center nearby, they have amazing prices. they have pricematching for amazon, newegg and the manufacturer. They also have a 30$ off motherboards if you buy a compat processor so a i3-8100 (120$) + b360m ds3h mobo (34.99 after  instant 30$ off) is less than a i5-7400.

You don't need a new copy of window when just swapping cpus. Windows is usually tied to a motherboard when doing an OEM copy.

I bought an OEM copy and I was able to swap from a Ryzen 5 1600X and Asus Prime B350 Plus to an 8700K and Asus Prime Z370-A on the same copy with no problem.

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

I had a G4560 6 months ago which I bought for my itx system and I changed it with an i5 7500 for $130. It works well and sips not that much power plus heat output is also reasonable. Now whether you should upgrade to a 7500 or to a 7700 depends in my mind on the price, if you can get an i7 7700 for $200 or less choose it else go for 7500 and do not buy it for more than $120-130.

No, you don't have to upgrade any windows or anything like that. The only thing you have to change is the video driver as G4560 and i5 7500/7500 don't have the same igpu . It's easy though. Just uninstall the old one and install the new one.

Main system (Mini itx 80mm)

i5-7500 | Asrock h110m | Noctua L9i | Realan H80 Case | 8GB 2400 Ram ADATA | M600 SSD | 500 GB Seagate

Other System (Laptop)

i7 3632QM | Toshiba | 8GB Corsair VS RAM | Sandisk SSD PLUS | 500GB Toshiba HDD

Indeed sometimes it works just fine but that isn't guaranteed and the OEM copy of Windows is designed to be attached to a specific system and they do this by attaching it to the motherboard. I have had it work also going from one motherboard to another but I have also had it not work as well.

When asking what to upgrade to, you really need to tell us what you use your system for. It can drastically change what recommendations you get.

The i3 honestly won't be an upgrade. It's basically the same thing as the G4560.

I agree with the other part though; no point in spending the money on an older generation i5 when the i3 is going to give you better performance. Unless you're going to a K variant for a good deal, but if he has a G4560 I doubt he has a Z motherboard.
