Use a dark rock pro 4 on a delidded i5 8600k

Hello!

Is that possible?

I am thinking of some problems with the height difference on the cpu... can that be a problem or not?

Thanks a lot guys!

i would use liquid metal instead of a "normal" thermalpaste, would that cause some problems with the dark rock pro 4?

Yes, there won't be a problem regarding height.

Using liquid metal also shouldn't cause any problems, since the bottom of the Dark Rock Pro 4 isn't copper.

The bottom is nickle plated copper which is not an issue.

The issue is if it was aluminium.

And yes OP, you can use that cooler with a delided i5 8600k without issues if you do everything correctly. I use DarkRock Pro 2 with delided i7 4770k myself.

Yup. If you go balls to the walls and do it correctly. then a drop of 15 - 20 degrees Celsius is seen on a regular basis.

There are two separate gains to be got from delidding. Part is from reducing the IHS spacing, part is from upgraded thermal compound.

For the first part, it depends on how good or bad it was before the delid, and how much load was on the CPU, as more power = more gains.

For the second part: Replacing with another higher quality conventional compound at the same time, I've seen drops in the ball park of 5 to 10 °C. To get the bigger gains (15 - 20 °C), you're looking at liquid metal and not conventional pastes.
