I'd go for the WD Green or Sandisk Plus. They are better than the A400, and they are actually the same product! (WD Green is rebranded Sandisk SSD Plus)

I want to upgrade a relative's laptop with a 120 GB SSD and swap the dvd drive for a hd caddy adapter. So far I've found 3 SSD options: Kingston a400, Sandisk Plus and WD Green, all 120 GB. Which one should I get? Is there a better option?

Kingston will run you max 40 dollars and Sandisk will run you max 80 dollars, so really it comes down to choice and what you want to spend. Also, might I add, personally have had a Kingston and loved it, also have had Sandisk it and loved it just as much, each had their own little things that made one perform a certain way than the other so yeah.

I will just get the cheapest one, performance differences is very marginal at best.
If they all the same price, I would go for the one with the fastest read speed.

That's not true.  Sometimes a few extra bucks can make an enormous difference.

@IgorM You need to tell us the country and budget.    If you're in the US, the Silicon Power S55 is going pretty cheap right now.  They aren't Samsung quality, but for the price they're great.  Stay away from the WD Green ones though, as they're very slow.

@LienusLateTips Source?  They don't perform the same, and they're two different companies, so I don't see how that could possibly be true.

Lol everyone bashing the greens WD's been selling them for months now, and they are damn good, They no Samsung but look at the price.

And yes the Greens and the Sandisk's are identical, they use the exact same controller inside, we cracked one open at work when they didn't believe me here, they the exact same PDB and layout.

I recently had a couple modular raid controllers with exact same layout, exact same chips, exact same board...but one was just an HBA, the other was a raid card. If the OEM sticker was missing there would be no way to physically tell them apart.

I forgot that WD purchased Sandisk, but that still doesn't make the drives the same.  The Green models are rather pitiful.

These SATA drives come in 2.5" and M.2 2280 form factors, and appear to be similar to (if not directly based on) the SanDisk SSD Plus line. According to Anandtech, these new drives use a low-end Silicon Motion controller and no DRAM cache.

so far the cheapest option is a kingston uv400 for 180 BRL at a physical store, so no shipping cost. The others will cost between 200 - 220 BRL including shipping

why tho? my OS has been on a 120GB SSD for years. hell, i used only a 120GB SSD for the vast majority of PC's i've built!

he's clearly looking for the cheapest option, so i think 240 is out of the question anyway.

OT:

Kingston is a good brand, so i would say that yes, the UV400 would be a good drive.

lower capacity drives tend to have lower performance metrics, For a small bump in price from a 120-240, you get improved performance.

That has pretty low 4k read speeds. How do the Silicon Power S55 or A55 models compare price wise?

SSDs slow down as they get full, and windows is going to take up a lot of space on that 120GB SSD. Especially if you put any modern game on it. Just save up for a 240GB, shouldn't be too much more expensive.
