I could see using something like this in some situations. Not necessarily in a day to day life, but where ever the isolation is strong enough they would shine. 

I've used similar tech earmuffs that allows you to hear whispering or sneaky footsteps easily (you can adjust the volume) and muffle shots from an assault rifle. Not that that's very useful for most people, but hearing normal stuff at normal volume and loud stuff at lower volume is pretty cool in many situations.
