All files on drive non addressable

Go to solution Solved by Daymin,

IT IS STEAM.

After everything working again I tried to install a game and that caused the same problems again.

A reboot was this time enough to fix it but why would steam mess up my HDD?

I've just upgraded my computer and wanted to feel the glorious advantages of the pc master race in it's full glory.

But I've got a huge problem with one of my drives.

  • I can't acces any of my files on the E: drive (HDD).
  • There are 223 GB of data on the drive as of the properties of the drive
    • If I check all the folders in the drive it says there are only 26GB on the drive.
    • if I try to save those 26GB onto an external drive only 4GB are transfered without en error
  • If I try to access and file an error message says that the file has been moved or renamed
    • but I can see all the files
    • executing .exe gives me the 0x0000006 error code
  • chkdsk says the the file format is RAW and can therefor not check the drive
    • i've formated the drive to ntfs before putting it into the new computer
    • the drive is 0% fragmented
  • the problems start occuring after trying to install a steam game and steam saying that there is a harddrive error
    • but I was able to install steam games without a problem before that

I would love to get some quick and useful help.

Seems like a bad hdd. restore backups. if you don't have backups,

How much do you care about the data?

If you care alot send it to a data recovery service, they can do much better than any software solution you can try does.

If you want to do diy, make a image with ddrescue then go at it with a program like photorec, you will probably get some.

I've got all of the important data (110GB) on a back up I would only loose a few CAD files if the drive would die completely most of it would just be reinstalling/downloading programms and games.

data recovery service would not be worth the money.

All the files worked just this morning without anything happening inbetween.

You made it sound like you just formatted your drive right now, just to fix that chkdsk RAW error.  Try a different SATA port and change the cables.

I've just cleared the cmos of the mainboard and running chkdsk on start up to see if that is doing anything.

When that is done I'll try another Sata port for the drive.

Fingers crossed that chkdsk goes through and let the drive return to normal status so the rest of the files can be copied out.

Now the drive and all it's files are fully addressable but only one of the two Ram dimms is being detected.

I'll backup all my files and then try to fix my Ram problem.

Disconnect the HDD after backing up all of the data and then see if that will fix your ram problem.

Disconnecting the HDD didn'T change anything but after some testing I found out this:

  • Both ram sticks work on their own
  • only two of the sockets do work (one of each color)
  • only one stick at the time works

Both sticks worked at the same time so what could be the problem?

the Windows Memory test you can run on startup didn't bring up any message after finishing

EDIT: updated the bios but that didn't change anything

Today a reseated the CPU and now the RAM seems to be working again.

But I would still like to know what caused the HDD to act weird.

haunted hardware I guess

IT IS STEAM.

After everything working again I tried to install a game and that caused the same problems again.

A reboot was this time enough to fix it but why would steam mess up my HDD?
