which processor

I am upgrading my processor but cannot decide between the r5 2600x, the i7 8700 or the i5 8600k. At the moment I only play games on my pc but I would like to not have to upgrade it for a few years. However there is a chance that I will need to run scientific modelling programs on it in the near future. Which one would be best

The i7-8700 is the fastest processor of the bunch here for gaming and it should be decent too for modeling. That said, you will likely be stuck with 6c/12t on this platform. It's also the most expensive, though. You could put a hefty OC on the 2600X and still leave some money in the bank at the expense of some gaming performance. If overclocking is not a priority, i7-8700 or R7 2700X.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

i would personally probably chose the 2600x since its not that much slower than the 8700 and its a good deal cheaper

Honestly I would check to see how ryzen deals with the type of modeling you are going to use. There is a chance that it doesn't play well with the Zen architecture and the 8700 would be much better than the 2600x in this use case. If the simulations you plan on using play nice with Zen then I would go for the 2600x personally.

An overclocked i5-8600K, to even something easily attainable (i.e. 4.8GHz), will wipe the floor with an i7-8700 (Non-K) when it comes to gaming.

But you'll need a more expensive board and cooler which can bring the total price near that of a 8700/K.

If you dont want to upgrade your CPU in the next couple of years, i would go ham. 8700k is currently your best option in that regard.

When it comes to gaming Ryzen will age faster and will therefore faster become a Bottleneck for future GPUs unless you do 4k gaming.

In Gaming the Intel 8700/8600k/8700k are faster out of the box than most Ryzen CPUs can get with overclocking. (air/water cooling)

buy a seperte pc for scientific modelling you will need a core i9 to tr or even xeon. and do you want to overclock
