I'm trying to pick up the AW2518H monitor for around or less than $400. It was $350 on Best Buy at one point.

That's the Hf model with FreeSync. The non-f model has G-Sync and OP has a GTX 1080, so I figure they will want the G-Sync model.

god fuck NVIDIA for not supporting VESA sync. I really want 240Hz and that as well as a few others are really reasonable.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

yes, especially with high refresh screens. When implemented right, freesync works well too, too bad nvidia refuses to support it.
I have a 144Hz 1080p screen, and even with my 1080 some games just wont stay above 144Hz (or I dont want buffered style vsync's latency).

This makes settings that makes the game hover between 110-144 fps not a problem at all. Without it high refresh gaming is a pain really. I can only imagine this is even more true with 240Hz.

I think you're thinking of adaptive Vsync, not the same as vesa adaptive sync. Adaptive Vsync turns off vsync when it gets below the sync framerate to prevent those vsync stutters below 60.

NVIDIA refuses to support adaptive sync (the generic name for the standard freesync uses)
And on 60Hz screens, yah it's less useful. I mean it would allow you to game smoothly sub 60, but when you get closer to 30 it flickers or with freesync it often doens't support below a  certain framerate, like 45 on some screens I think. It can make dips below 60 a much better experience (and has in my experience) but I'd just prefer to not game below 60 anyway. Inconsistent framerate is very bad below 60, smooth or not. One nice thing it does is allow you to set an arbitrary framerate cap and sync perfectly. So like if you're squeezing 50-60 but it stays there, good I guess. 75? Sure, no need for the game to support it.

You guys are considering 144hz to 240hz. I was considering the Asus PG248Q as a 3rd option. Gsync is a must and this monitor is 180hz. Is there even a millisecond of difference. How much input lag difference is there between the 2 monitors?
