Anyone have a solution for DaVinci Resolve Stuttering

Is there a way to make DaVinci Resolve more usable? The timeline scrolling is super slow and playback is always stuttering for me.

 

Edit: System i5-4590, 16GB RAM, GTX 970

I really like the layout and quick editing style that the software allows for. And the freely available is a huge plus to install on multiple devices. I want to get it to work, but I keep going back to other stuff because of the constant stuttering. Using latest one with the GPU rendering option selected.

Install it on an NVME drive, use the GPU for rendering, more memory, or faster CPU

I've tried to use that program many times. I thought it was my i7-980X being old causing the stuttering, but when I moved to an R5-1600X and it never got any better, I was surprised. I'm even more surprised now that I'm on an overclocked 8700K and it still stutters just as badly.

 

Fuck it. I went back to Windows Movie Maker. Lol.

Most editing programs work much better when the source content is being pulled from a very fast drive. Also quad channel memory is a must as most use the RAM as a cache then when they fills it goes to the drive

What version are you using? Resolve 15 works pretty good on my r7 1700 and gtx 1070. It only stutters when usinng super advanced effects.

Also, the stuttering might be because of the file format you try to edit, so what is it?

This might be it, I don't know what file format would be best. I have MOV from Fujifilm XT20.

If the playback is stuttering I would first look at the used footage. Most files from consumer cameras are horrible to edit with due to theier compression. Try transcoding them to a more friendl codec like one of the DNxHD/DNxHR Codecs or the Cineform Codec. Those work much better when editing. You could also tr using pproxys which are reduced in resolution (only makes sense if you're editing 4K Footage)

Just use the Optimized Media feature and consider using Resolve 14 since the Optimized Media didn't work for me while working with 5k cdng footage.

Yep I selected the 970. Playback was at 1/4 or 1/8, I can't remember.

I would have tested a bit myself or my GPU wasn't dead, haven't gotten a new one yet sadly :/

29,97 fps, but Resolve should automatically detect it and ask you if you want to change the timeline to that framerate as long as it's the first footage you put on it anyway. I don't think that would cause stuttering anyway?

I dont think I his will help you, but I now have an RX 580 (and OCed my 3570k to 4.2 Ghz) and a 4k 25p at 100 Mb/s do playback fine for me. Stutters only right after I moved the playhead for a second.

 

No change done to the files.
