SLI stops at 2.

Also you can't SLI titan Vs, so only one.

If he can afford it, single more powerful GPU is the best choice.

If you're just gaming, I suggest you just stick with 1 powerful card (1080Ti) Been there, done that. Had a 1080Ti in SLI this January 2018. Had to sell it because I had the chance to sell it for more what I bought for. SLI nowadays are pretty useless in gaming, I actually get lower FPS with SLI enabled. It's sole purpose is to either just show off / doing workload related stuffs. If you're just gaming, SLI is just a waste of money.

Incidentally, this is false.

About 70% of current games will see an improvement with SLI compared to a single card.

If he wanted the best single card solution, the Titan V is king.

Titan V is just a waste.

Same for SLI.

Get single 1080ti and whenever new cards show up, sell it and get the new juicy stuff.

Doesn't mean its the most expensive it's the best. For a $1000+ more than the 1080Ti and only a few FPS improvement. I wouldn't call that the best.

I didn't mention the price. Some people can afford to buy the best performing parts, and for a single card setup the Titan V currently is in that spot with about a 20 to 30% lead.

The OP wasn't asking what is the best value for a budget build.

You definitely want some serious gpu power in that case. If you can water cool the rig, I would recommend either two Titan Xp or a single Titan V.

Without water cooling, a pair of AIB 3 fan 1080 Ti or a single Titan V would be best.

The reason for Titan Xp only under water are that their air coolers are bad, and multi fan 1080Ti will outperform them in that case.

Wait. None of the flagship cards are anywhere close to where they should be. Only card close to MSRP and available is the 1080. Buy one and in 6 months when the new cards are on shelves buy that, and either sell the 1080 or keep us as backup.

The cards you listed are good cards, just overpriced right now, with the 11 series inbound.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I bought the NVLink bridges for my pair of Titan V cards, but those connectors are not enabled with the stock vbios and Geforce driver stack (Titan V uses the same driver as all Geforce cards). I have a Quadro GV100 vbios now, and bought a chip flasher so I'm going to force flash the Quadro BIOS and see if turning the Titan V into a fake Quadro will be enough to make NVLink work. SLI is supported over NVLink so in theory this might do the trick.
