Do molex to 6 pin adapters normally look like this?

I am upgrading my friends computer with a new graphics card and he doesn't have two six pin cables so I bought a molex to six pin adapter for it, and it doesn't have a pin connected, I might be stupid, but is this broken, or is this normal?

yep thats fine, those pins aren't needed.

Should work as an adapter, but before you use the new graphics card, make sure his power supply is powerful enough to run it. If it doesn't have the sufficient connectors, it might be too low wattage.

Just because it doesnt have the sufficiant connectors doesnt mean the PSU is too low wattage, i wouldnt scare monger other members like this.

Even if it has the wattage, still not a great idea to use adapters.

 

If a PSU was intended to run a high power graphics card, it'd come with more than 1 PCIe power cable attached. Either that or it's quite an old unit.

Rubbish, thats what adapters are intended for..  So your saying if someone has a 700watt PSU for example and doesnt have a second 6 pin they should bin their psu and buy a new one?

 

I have news mate not everyone has money to just chuck down the drain like this.

If you have a 700 watt power supply that only has 1 PCIe cable it's probably a trash quality/cheap chinese PSU, in which case, you definitely shouldn't be using adapters, or even using it in the first place.

If adapters were such a bad idea as u suggest why would companies include them with their cards and also give them a guarentee?  What your suggesting is just utter madness.

If you've been around the block then you'd know using adapters on a cheap/poorly made PSU isn't a good idea.

"Make sure it's powerful enough" and "It might be too low wattage" are not scare mongering. That would be "your house will burn down" or "it will blow up your PC"

 

Additionally his statements are accurate, if a unit doesn't have enough cables to begin with then it's probably a low quality unit. If a $20 CX 450 watt PSU has more cables than a 700 watt PSU then you have a problem and should steer clear of that 700 watt PSU at all costs.

Not scaremongering, just friendly advice. My statement is true, if there's not sufficient connectors, it might be too low wattage to drive the card. The power rail that the MOLEX connectors are on also might not be able to provide enough power for a PCI-E connector, if it has multiple rails.

Nobody. We were just erring on the side of caution. You don't want to tell somebody that the adapter will work 100% then the power supply dies because you're drawing too much power for too long.

 

Also, if it doesn't have all the connectors you need, chances are it is cheap. Any modern 600+W PSU will have at least two PCI-E connectors, 6-pin if not 8-pin.

CPU? I can only imagine you mean PSU given the thread

 

If you have a decent budget, a Corsair RMx/RMi, or EVGA G2/G3. If your budget is tight have a look for Corsair CXm's, theyre on sale quite alot at newegg for about $20-30, and you won't find better for that price.

I have an Intel one at the moment but it won't start up that's why I came here so I do not know the number but it is a early version of it

The missing pin on the 4-pin Molex looks like the 5V line, which isn't a problem since graphics cards don't use 5V.

 

The missing pin on the PCIe connector is normally not connected if it's the 6-pin variety.

 

So in theory, it should be fine.

I do have an old (very old... box-shaped) Corsair GS700 which is completely capable spec-wise of running 2 modern GPU's.. but it only has 2 PCIe connectors lol

 

I payed like $30 for it two years ago

You'd be better making a thread in this section and explaining your problem, might be able to troubleshoot you through it and get it working again.
