Upgrading my brother's old rig

My brother is turning 15 next month. So me ND my parents decided to surprise him by upgrading his system. Our total budget is $600. It shouldn't go beyond $600...as my dad is already doing overtime....we live in Dallas, tx..

Here are his current system specs...

Core 2 duo 8400

6gb ram

Gigabyte g41m combo motherboard

Western digital blue 500gb

Antec case and PSU..

GTX 750ti.

I am planning to buy a new GTX 1080.....I guess it'll be a major upgrade to that 750ti...

Lmao what? A GTX1080 and an E8400?

You gotta be kidding me?

Edit: the 750ti would actually be the last thing I'd upgrade here.

Look at something like:

R3 2200g

8gb ddr4

120gb ssd

New psu

Or try to get your hands on some used, maybe even ddr3 platform.

Edit2:

The 8400 is legit dogshit.

if you can squeeze out a few more dollars, then this is probably your best bet. It is low frequency ram which Ryzen really benefits from higher speed but this is a really low budget. Upgrading this time with RAM and GPU (though GPU prices have been falling) is difficult because they are outrageously priced. If you don’t want to upgrade his whole platform, I’d say no more than a 1060 because of bottleneck and then get a nice SSD for him.

Dude I just had dinner plz stop.

Here, just reuse the 750ti, there's basically no good way to upgrade the system, and there's no major GPU upgrade to go for.

You could get an R3 2200G system for $400 and save the rest for when GPU prices are back to normal, then you'd just want to sell the rest because the R3 2200G is about as fast as the 750ti/GT 1030

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Sell the current system for $50, and build around a Ryzen 3 2200g, without a graphics card. It is a very good APU with great graphics, and does great in games.

When your father is able to save some more, spend some money on a dedicated GPU such as a 1060 6GB.

hi.

I wouldn't recommend upgrading that platform at all. It's not really hurting much for an upgrade anywhere it would make sense to spend money on. Money is better spent elsewhere.

If you want to check local used stuff, there's Goodwill Computer Works in Dallas, I picked up a few decent things there. Might score a decent used i5 rig and just throw the 750ti in it until prices on RAM and GPU's make a little more sense and/or have larger budget later on.

Other than that, a Ryzen APU setup like mentioned above would be the other best option IMO

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

He doesn't want an overall new system...

Here's what I have planned for him...

Core2extreme qx9775 - $50

8gb ram stick - $30

Crucial mx500 250gb - $70

Seagate Barracuda 2tb - $50

GTX 1070 evga - $400..

I hope his current PSU will be able to withstand all that powerdraw ND heat...

His current PSU is a super flower leadex gold 650w

I'll simply pass my old hyper 212 Evo to him...

Well....acc to me an i7 6700k + 980ti should theoretically and practically outperform 2200g and 2400g

It Obviously Outperforms the Ryzen APU for sure but look at the cost also.

I can get that 6700k combo + 980ti entirely fr about $550

Does that includes ram and motherboard? Cause You are on budget build so build something as Core per Dollar and reasonable for gaming.
