Could be, yes. Most of the time, the board will short and not even post until the standoffs are removed.

If by extra standoffs you mean you have standoffs that are touching the backside of the motherboard, then it's possible. If by extra stand offs, you mean you installed an mATX or mITX board in an ATX case, then probably not since theyre not making contact with the back side of the motherboard.
