x99 vs AM4 vs TR4

Right now I am using a 6800k on a asus edition 10 motherboard. I was planning on upgrading my cpu until I saw that upgrading it would cost as much as a ryzen 2700x and motherboard. Now I'm trying to decide which platform to go to or stay on the x99. Looking for pros and cons of each socket. I play games and video edit/rendering.

the TR4 socket is the Red ream equiv to X99 etc.

So, if you need X99.  you probably also need TR4.

Personally I'd stick with what you've got unless you need the cores from TR4. AM4 would be a sidegrade in any case, at least until Zen 2 releases.

IS there any info on what zen 2 will be exactly?

Even a 2700x is a side grade, I would stay where you are.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Ryzen, but a fair bit better. It'll be 7nm instead of 14 or whatever Zen is.

The reason I thought about tr4 is because I could upgrade to this

Or for the same price do this

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/cRDzK8/amd-threadripper-1920x-35ghz-12-core-processor-yd192xa8aewof

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/3fYWGX/asus-rog-strix-x399-e-gaming-eatx-tr4-motherboard-rog-strix-x399-e-gaming

Which seams to be a better upgrade

Even compared to the 6800k?

Don't buy a new older CPU, bad idea. Find a used 6900k.

or something like this?

So no improvement to moving to a newer chipset and selling mine?

A second hand i7 6900k is actually a great pick, this 8c/16t Intel processor is still somewhat higher performance than the Ryzen 7 2700x while you have Intel's HEDT benefits and all.

Personally that's what I'd do.

TR is a beast, no argument there. But unless you're purely doing heavy multithreaded workloads it can perform worse in games than even a 1700. That's looking at reviews and personal experience with friends who run TR.

REALLY depends on your priority. If gaming is the priority I'd stay where you are and not go over a 6900k, as you start to lose gaming performance as the core count climbs. If you need core in a bad way, a used CPU is the most cost effective.

Or hold out until TR gets some 12nm lovin. Should be this summer.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

There would be improvement from moving to X399, but that improvement would not be worth the money atm. Especially if you still use slower 2133 or 2400 DDR4 RAM. TR is highly dependent on RAM speeds and latency, though not as much as mainstream Ryzen. So you would probably have to invest in better RAM as well, and that can become very expensive.

Going with that 6950X or a used 6900K (for the right price) would be the smart choice IMO.

I use 3200 ddr4, but I'll probably upgrade the cpu and hold out for another few generations of chipsets

You could try finding a used 5960x ...; Those are getting older now and are hitting the used market now

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
