More FPS = Faster Laps???

I love playing racing simulation games, even if I have a peasant PC.

And there was a time when I had a peasant PC [it might still be after little upgrade]

I play Assetto Corsa with mouse steering now. But in early days when I had a nVidia GT 610 I used to play F1 2013 in the lowest settings.

I got around 40 FPS and a lap around Monza was 1:25:###

Two years later I upgraded to GTX 760. Easy 200 FPS and lap around Monza is 1:23:### !!!

 

How am I 2-3 seconds faster in the same car, same setup??

More FPS = Faster Laps?

You get to see more frames so you can react faster. You also may have improved in the last two years.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

No the difference is negligible

But 40fps is a bit on the low side. Its entirely possible that there was some stuttering in some bad places that costs you a bit of time.

There's something wrong, you should be a lot faster. Five times the frames means you should be able to finish the lap in 17 seconds. The Internets are full of videos proving how higher FPS makes the game proportionally faster. Maybe it's now so fast that you struggled to stay on the track and were thereby forced to drive slower, explaining the abysmal lap time for 200 FPS? Keep practising, I'm sure you'll eventually be able to reach that 17 seconds mark!

It may just be that the better frame rate allows you to time when to do things better, especially if you're using visual cues. Depending on what the total session distance is, those fractions of a second can add up. It wouldn't make sense to run the timer against your frame rate.

For 2 secs worth, not likely. Steady fps in any racing game is better than more fps. There aren't any sudden actions for which you need to react in ms timescale.

Could be luck, could be that your reaction times have improved since the last time you played, could be the fact that more frames made the game feel faster and it helped you play better, who knows.

There is a way you can actually test this theory of yours.

In nvidia control panel set a custom resolution of whatever your screen resolution is (1920x1080 or whatever) and set its refresh rate to 30hz.
Leave vsync on in game and the game will run at 30fps even on your new graphics card. Try setting some laps (I recommend at least 10 laps) and take your average time.
Then switch back to your normal display settings with the higher refresh rate and set another 10 laps and compare the average time of those 10 laps to the previous times.

If you end up testing it, let us know how you go.

There's another scenario that hasn't been mentioned, and that is in the last 2 years it's possible that the game was updated to make the cars handle differently.

Faster laps is all about confidence in the breaking zone, the more you play the better you will judge it, running at a consistent 60fps helps as you get used to the amount of pressure and length of time on the break pedal.
