It's Aorus, the gaming brand of Gigabyte. Not related to Asus in any way (Asus doesnt have a competing product either)

It depends on what your current laptop has, but since it doesnt support thunderbolt 3, I doubt if it has the hardware to use a graphics card of this firepower to its full potential (excluding putting it in a desktop).

are there any GPU enclosures that do not use thunderbolt ? i thought all of them did purely because the bandwidth needed?

my other question would be, why did you buy something like this, without checking if it will actually work with your laptop first?

before thunderbolt, only way to get an egpu for your laptop was through mpcie slot which is wired for 1x, I believe those are still used by some to this day.

why did you buy it without knowing you can use it? the reason they use thunderbolt is due to it's higher bandwidth. no other port is going to have the throughput to not be useless. i would send it back/cancel the order or get a laptop with thunderbolt

Usb 3.1 (C) at 10 gbps could probably manage, but that is still 1/4 the 40gbps offered by thunderbolt 3.

The old method for obtaining this was by tapping direction into the PCI-E lanes on the laptop by either the bottom panel or some other trickery.

Without knowing more about your laptop I cannot give you possible options though.

return it and DIY a egpu using the PCIe from the wireless card.

can you convert thunderbolt to PCIe from a wireless card?

that would be interesting.

Except that tb egpus are still not great when compared to a regular card. So dropping it down even further to just 3.1 makes an egpu a very expensive slight upgrade

That is true, they will not have the same performance of a regular card. The thing is, they will still offer superior performance to what is being currently used on the laptop. Also the biggest drop in performance is when you choose to use an EGPU and have it display on the laptops screen instead of using a dedicated display.

There will be a performance hit regardless when using tb3. Which is why I mentioned the PCI-E options.

no idea. The Chinese sell those PCIe adapters, maybe they have that too. I guess for people that don't have thunderbolt but want to use a enclosure with tb and not go DIY.
