Why hasent linus done anything intel itanium?

intel itanium at least to my knowledge is for like supercomputers and workstations and shit, and info is pretty bare, so why hasn't Linus done anything even remotely related to itanium, if he is over there chopping up GTX titans and shit?

Itanium is kind of a useless architecture nowadays. It's not heavily supported by OS mfgs and is essentially a legacy thing at this point. The newest Kittson itanium chips are still on 32nm and haven't changed in IPC since 2012.

idk

Itanium is a really old platform. The performance compared to more modern Intel chips is awful, and the only reason it is still around is because Intel has a contractual obligation with (I believe) HP to provide new ones until a certain date. Newer versions of Windows Server and Linux-based OSes also do not support Itanium chips.

The 9700 series is the final generation of Itanium.

It might make a good mention in a video discussing dead/Eol architects, but beyond that I wouldn't see a point.

Yes. HPE and Intel are in a ~250mil contract to continue production of Itanium for the last generations. Might pick up an itanium chip just for classic S and Gs, drill a hole in it, and put it on my keychain. Like the actual chip, not the outside vrms and shite that they're meant to have.

idk

I found a way to install Windows Server 2016 on a Itanium processor. It's not stable yet though.

Not many people know what it is or, maybe would really care about it.

They could do a techquickie video about it if that's what you were maybe suggesting?

When you're spending millions of dollars, you expect million dollar quality.

You expect the sharpest of the cutting edge but you also expect that cutting edge to not cut off a body part.

You expect shit to not break even in the most insane design situations.

And that's what a mainframe like that proves.

At best all Linus can do is talk about it. There's no real point in getting an Itanium system these days because they're stupid expensive for what performance you can get and to make the most of it requires niche software that his target audience wouldn't use or appreciate.

Intel has decided to discontinue Itanium as it didn't really catch on, and AMD's 64 bit standard won...  but because they had some agreements with HP and they were sued by HP for lots of money, they were forced to release that last Itanium chip

(It's not like HP thinks Itanium is the bomb, think of it like HP having big customers that bought mainframes with tens to hundreds of such Itanium processors and HP has contracts with those guys to provide spare parts and all that crap for 10-20 years or even more, so HP needed to make stock of Itanium processors as replacements for those customers)
