Resetting Windows?

There is an option in windows that says reset windows and choose to keep personal files or not. If I do this will it delete all my stuff or will it just reinstall windows? Trying to fix a botched upgrade

Just keeping this here as a reset doesn't delete your files ; just your programs and settings . I believe windows even confirms that before reset anyway

If you click keep personal files it will keep your personal files. It will not completely reinstall windows. If you have a virus then this could help but for me it did not work. If you have a virus I would just clean reinstall windows from a USB but this looses your files. Good luck!

Windows will keep personal files such as pdfs, pngs, txt files, and ect. 

 

Windows is also very stupid and will more than likely leave behind elements of programs that should have been removed and might even not remove entire programs all together. 

 

The idea is to just reinstall windows and keep your personal data, the implementation is short of lackluster. 

 

All of this is assuming that Windows can even perform the reset.....

No. Same for viruses. If it comes back, it is because YOU ran it the malware again, or ran the file that contains the virus. Meaning it was not removed prior of the re-install, and you executed the infection again.

 

That said, they was reports of Apple having a virus that installs itself into the keyboard firmware of their laptop, due to lack of any security there, and re-infect the system. As keyboard firmware aren't available to consumer to re flash the system, you need to buy a new Apple laptop. However, I doubt you have something like this, most malware and viruses we get infected are mostly in the target facility of inconvenience (pop-up ads, search engine replacement, home page replacement) to ransomware
