That is one unusual motherboard - if it works, it'd help make an excellent DOS machine. S3 had fantastic 2D quality and performance.

I do but I don't - Could be the X, LA, E or standard "Deluxe" version.
Also, look where the name of the board is and see what version it is - Will either be a 1.04 or 2.0 version.

Deluxe version now needs caps before restoration of my Athlon XP 3000+

Both my old A7V266 and my slightly newer A7N8X-X have developed capacitor issues a couple weeks ago after many years of faithful tinkering (I bought the A7V266 brand new back in 2000). I was understandably sad.

Then I went for training in Ottawa two weeks ago, and halfway through the week I find a random Facebook marketplace ad for a pair of A7V8X boards. For $5 each. I picked them up on my way home.

Spoiler

PXL_20220818_214333655.thumb.jpg.65f07ac292d67c66217ea7e7e76f03a4.jpg

They are literally brand new in the box. The kid I bought them from (had to be like 16 or 17) found them in his dad's closet and didn't know if they were any good. They worked perfectly, first try.

Best $10 I've ever spent.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Re-capping really isn't hard, I've done it.

I have caps coming but they're a month or more out. I'll have those boards running again, don't you worry.

Oh no. Maybe try a 9800GT or GTX?

9800 GTX+ arrived.

And it's working great!  Don't mind the windows 7 install, it's just for testing.  I imagine getting XP up and running properly will take more time than I was willing to spend for possibly bad hardware.

That should run cooler than any of the dead cards ever did.

The cooler looks backwards (compared to my Gainward 8800 GTX) but the sticker is not????

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Apparently it was a thing.  I would have preferred the other style but there were two listed with this cooler that were relatively cheap.  We'll see how well it works blowing against my intake radiator.

It didn't hit me at first because its such a stupid decision - WTF were they thinking.

I bought every HGST drive ever made. I'm not kidding. This is every major revision of a 3.5" SATA chassis. Deskstars on top, high end on bottom.

image.thumb.png.0beae517645a3d687d555399438226bf.png

Spoiler

The high end drives (1x IDE deskstar and 3x Ultrastar) all have three screws on the head, and internally have 6 screws around the spindle clamp. The deskstars only have 1 or 2 on the head, and a conical spindle clamp with a single central screw. The Deskstars and the first two high end drives all use the same exact chassis on the inside. The earlier high end drives have big metal shielding on the bottom but that is lost with the first Ultrastar with the mirrored finish part (2010), and persists on the design through 2014. These chasses were slightly deeper and could fit another platter.

I'm not sure.  It was fairly common at the time though.  I've seen identical coolers from BFG and EVGA.  The temps aren't terrible either so hopefully not all bad.

I don't have an AT PSU to test the board and K6, but I think it was a pull from an OEM system hence the onboard S3 video card. The L3 cache card is kind of interesting...

The Pentium 3 pictured in the plastic box by the top of the board is the Tulatin I'd been looking for in my basement, was only off by about 10 miles. I think it's a 1ghz example of one but I'd need to install it in a board to find out. I'll get them when I go back to my storage again in a couple weeks. Seriously, free to a good home people, none of the caps on the board look bad.

An hour and a half ago, I pushed my keyboard aside to crack open my newly acquired laptop (won't boot from any source, seeing if cables are connected and clearing CMOS).

I bit off more than I could chew...

All I found out is that it's got an i5 500 series that turbos to 3ghz, and it is about as cursed as a computer can get.

Jarritos ❤

So what's up with the laptop?

Honestly no clue what the root cause is. Reboots out of installers from USB or CD, doesn't boot from a drive with an OS already installed. SSD, USBs, and ODD are detected properly in BIOS though.

Windows bootloader and GRUB2 same issue?

The only pristine video cards that I can buy are all low end models/disasters. Welcome 128bit SiS 315 SDR SiS 315 (Apollo 3D Thrill 315) and Radeon VE.

20220831_174613.thumb.jpg.af6dcd0b0f5473b3350f7d30c228a6f7.jpg

Pretty much the worst example of the 315 possible - my particular card is AGP 2x only and being SDR it has barely more memory bandwidth than my Vanta, or SiS 305. It'd fit right in with the one shown in the VGA museum - it's just as bad:
VGA Legacy MKIII - SiS 315E (vgamuseum.info)
It'll be slower than the TNT2 Pro due to the memory bandwidth. And driver allowing barely faster than the TNT2 M64 - and only because of the core clock and maybe the T&L engine.

20220831_174623.thumb.jpg.2bfe996e9c6baedf80ac19bbf3024dc0.jpg

Yeah the VE should outright crush the 315E. The non-kneecapped 315 however traded blows in the single review I found (RIP Kyro II - you competed poorly).

Next is a 40 gig HDD I tryed putting in a PC years ago but the mobo didn't support anything over 6 gig. 20220901_192616.thumb.jpg.c024177703d42a551bbf9d276e7f8be8.jpg

And finally is a HP media centre I had to recover the data of for a friend as it was their Nan's and the psu died just before she did 20220901_192335.thumb.jpg.5d18f199c273ad5a808be2c97d540733.jpg20220901_192325.thumb.jpg.06975ea0886d646ddaaa54c1dc507cf0.jpg

I do have some old core 2 duos and 128mb ram sticks around too but I'll have to find them.
