Universal laptop charger standard coming 2014

ThreeFourThree

Saw this on Reddit: http://www.itproportal.com/2013/12/17/universal-laptop-charger-standard-coming-in-2014/

A new universal laptop charger standard that promises to cut down on e-waste has been published in the hope that it firms will choose to adopt it.

The International Electrotechnical Commission [iEC] Technical Specification 62700 would be compatible with a wide range of notebook computers and the IEC hopes that it will be adopted in the same way as the standard published for mobile phones.

We'll see if it actually gains any momentum, but it could be a good thing.

Hopefully this will get passed, can't wait, hate carrying around multiple chargers, include a built in USB port while you're at it, why don't you?

I'm pretty sure Targus has a similar solution already ("universal" by changing the tip)

I only see two problems. One, the adapter tip looks huge. How are you going to use that with an ultrabook? I like having a laptop I can easily pass to someone one handed, or slip into my bag with as easily as a tablet.

Two, every new laptop ships with a charger. How, exactly, is creating a standard going to eliminate waste? The only thing I can see is OEM's selling their notebooks without chargers, then having to buy one seprately, and only having that one for the rest of the notebooks you buy. I can see how that would make a little sense with cell phones they're replaced yearly by a lot of people. But how often do you really buy a new laptop as an average consumer? I know people still using 8 year old Dell's.

But I just love everything proprietary...let's just hope this thing is pretty.

I don't think this will succeed, and if the planned charger is the one depicted I'm positive that it won't succeed. I'm not against it in any way, and in fact I think it's an excellent idea, but convincing major companies to conform to a standard would be quite a tall order.

I think that's just an older charger for an older laptop....
