Who said the city would do this? The tax agency on the other hand can, especially by us since all cash machines are hooked up to them through the internet ;) .

Your government has obviously got you guys worried about a lot of "could be" type stuff.

Be careful man, they may be watching you talk about them. :)

The whole point of this discussion is about a city enacting a regulation that they cant enforce. This is not the state of New York doing this. Its a piss ant city government who most likely bit off more than they can chew. There is no reason that what every agency in New York that does taxes would ever tell the city about purchases. For the fact of the matter, the state might not know what your buying. Retailers are only requited to collect tax and for the retailers that dont, you as a citizen of the state are to report the amount spent not necessarily the item. Its not the job of the New York tax agency to enforce this law, its the job of the city. While I know some cities have sales tax, I doubt a piss ant like this one does.

The only Government that has the resources to watch what people buy is the Federal Government. Even then they have limits. They cant track purchases with cash. Because no the registers dont report to the government what you bought. Because business like Walmart aint going to give the ass hat government that kind of access. Credit card machine go over the internet to the Credit card processor. So if anything purchases on credit are the only ones that can be tracked and even then, some one could still use an alias if doing stuff online.

It sounds like you live under a soviet style dictatorship or somewhere like China. See us here in the US dont tolerate that type of shit.

That may be the the US is unlike any other country. Each state collects tax. Our Federal Government has no VAT or Sales tax, only states do. Thats where it gets iffy because online retailers dont always collect sales tax for each state. Generally if the retailer operates a warehouse or something in the state they collect tax, other wises its up to the citizen of that state to report it. We only started seeing states like Connecticut ask online retailers for lists of citizens who bought goods. And just because they ask, doesnt mean the retailers has to give them shit, because unless they operate an actually building in the state, the state cant compel them to do anything. As any transaction that goes across state lines is Federal jurisdiction. Remember the Federal Government doesn't collect a sales tax.
