Is it possible to make fams idle at 0rpm?

Mytre

This is a question I had since months or years.  My old fans were just 3 pin fans but my motherboard (asrock ab350 fatal1ty k4) was able to turn them off if I set the fan curves to 0 which was awesome for idling and not even playing games (30 to 40c without case fans on) but my cpu fan well, it was always at low rpm.

A fan not moving is a fan not making no noise, just like the GPU fans now are idling and turn on just when you need them too, is there any fan, fan controller that allows this to be possible for the cpu and case fans ?

So you want to turn off PWM fans? Yes, I can do that with the help of Speedfan.

How? I know that with the fan utilities from asrock, 3pin fans were able to be turned off at 0% on the curve, but pwm fans at 0% go to their fastest speed (same with the cpu cooler fan)

I follow Jayztwocents video to setup Speedfan. My mobo doesnt seem to let me turn off the 3pin fans no matter what, but at least I can get the PWM CPU fan to work

Even the white LED on the CPU fan stays on when it stops spinning

You can with speedfan but that is a not-so smart idea. I would prefer 50-150RPM rather than 0RPM.

I mean at idle, most CPUs crank down the core speed, and if it's still doing basically nothing it pretty much won't be generating heat. If it can hang out below a certain temp with no fans running, then there's no harm. As soon as the heat goes above that the fans kick back on until it's below the idle temp again.

Well yes you have a point. I would do that if my cpu is under 36C because then we don't need any fans.

I basically do that with my setup. I turn off all the case fans and just leave the pair of radiator fans running at about 350RPM (that's the lowest they'll reliably run at). Quiet enough to barely be heard and keeps it cool even under light load.

OK but how do you guys to that? my pwm fans wont go below 600rpm, if I set the curve to 0% they will instead crank up to max speed.  My cpu fan the same, And as he said, at idle all my clocks are really small and the pc is not generating heat, just noice from the fans and I usually let it idle while I dont have my headphones on.

Could you control the fan speed above 0% then? Probably just your particular mobo. Or you can use 'manual' mode for your PWM fans inside the configure ..> Advanced menu

How hard is it to set up a fan curve using speed fan so I can ditch the asrock fan utility?

as difficult as setting fan curve for your graphics card, i.e. easy.

I will test it when I get home to see if I can actually set my fans to idle at 0rpm, thanks.

I use the fan controller built into my motherboard. It's an Asus ROG motherboard.

If your mobo doesn't support 0rpm for fan headers, then it just doesn't. Mine does, but apart from CPU I don't see point. 3pins ramping to min speed is more annoying than running them as low as possible. My CPU2 fan is not spinning before CPU hits 60C. That one is PWM.

You were right, I am now able to control them with speedfan, However, 0% set my case fans to max speeds while my cpu fan at 0% is still spinning at about 700rpm ...  So I am still not able to turn off my pwm fans.

I guess just making them spin so slowly to the point in which you cant hear them is good enough

They normally are at their lowest speed, and I can still hear them. My other choice would be change all my fans for 3 pin fans so I can turn them off. My motherboard seems to be able to change the rpm of 3 pin fans down to basically 0 rpm.  Unlike pwm which only have a minimum rpm.

That could mean that mobo has some setting is mandatory min speed for CPU fan. Try turning off any warnings related to CPU fan speed.

The issue with my motherboard is that I dont see any choice like that. 0% sets all pwm fans to full speed. The only choice besides fan profiles is something to turn off the pc in case of motherboard overheat. but thats it

The settings should be under PC Health tab. And unless you have some super-limited OEM edition, you have option to disable fan speed warnings. Those are rather basic settings in BIOS.
