Android P Developer Preview 1 Announced: Evolution

15 minutes ago, DocSwag said:

As others have mentioned it's easier for one-handed use, and I feel like all across the top can block stuff out whereas being on the side feels out of the way.

It's only easier if you choose a phone too big. Otherwise, it's easy. Easier for those that aren't always holding their phone with the same hand or want accurate control with smaller phones. It also occupies space not usually used for frequent user interaction

One change I'll be less happy about https://www.xda-developers.com/android-p-blocks-custom-overlays-substratum-themes/

On one side Android becomes somewhat safer, on the other the improved ease of theming brought into Oreo will be reduced again.

Quote

Users with root access will also suffer from these changes, unfortunately. You can’t simply “force” install an overlay and expect it to work, because the platform certificate mismatch will still be an issue. It’s likely that framework.jar would need to be patched in order to get rid of this requirement. Custom ROMs would of course be able to make this kind of change, but unrooted users cannot.

Granted if roms patch it then I won't notice a difference o.O

I used it one handed with both a Note 4 and a Lumia 950XL.

Of course it is easy to do it one-handed with huge phones. But on my Pixel 2, the volume rocker is right in the middle of the phone, around the base of my thumb with the way I hold my phone. To change the volume one-handed I have to either hold the phone in my left hand, or shift the whole phone to the left and press it with my thumb. Having the slider on the right is much nicer (I already experience it with the power menu) because I can much more easily reach the side of my phone compared to the top.

I used to be quite active here.

Large phones are harder to use in nearly all regards. Manipulating volume is one of those things that's a bit harder on larger phones like the Note 4.

And the volume buttons on the 950XL are above and below the power button, which is dead center on the right side.

The power button was recessed, and so long as one's semi competent, they'll be adjusting volume and locking/unlocking the phone like a professional. I actually prefer that over the rocker on most other phones.

Still, no wonder why Lumia is dead.

Actually the button layout is very smart. Not once I did a mistake, and it is clear what is volume up and down.

The height are different, and the size. And you have no buttons on the other side.

Also the phone has a shutter button. With all the talks about cameras these days, it is surprising that no manufacture beside Nokia/MS ever though  about a 2-step button to launch the camera app  and take pictures... but I guess we have the Bixby button on Sams7ng phone.... :|

That's not true. Sony notoriously implements shutter buttons and has for years.

On most phones pressing volume button is taking a picture but its not 2 step button

Sony has an extremely similar layout. The difference being that it shares the 950 layout: volume rocker, power button, camera button.

It's not that nobody else has thought of it.

Patents. And the fact that the patent system is a joke, serving to stifle innovation rather than encouraging it like it was designed to do.

No it isnt, on most phones volume button is shutter button. At least the ones I have used.
HTC its shutter button. My Nexus device its shutter button. On my mums Samsung Galaxy its the shutter button. On my mums Ipad its the shutter button.
I have no idea what phone you are used to using...

You arent really supposed to zoom on phone cameras anyway the images get bad then.

S4, Note 4, S6, LG Stylo 2, Moto G, ZTE Grand Max 2, ZX Premium, Lumia 950, 950XL, Nexus 7 1st gen, Tab S, Note 10.1 2014

All of these phones and tablets, the rocker controls zoom. Only on my S8 does it do the ass backwards shutter button setup.

And unless you're maxing out the zoom, images can still come out as decent as a phone gets if you're half competent at pointing a camera at something.

I don't know what fantasy world you're living in, but unless you're using a crazy camera phone with optical Zoom, you're doing a digital zoom on your image, and *inherently* dropping the image quality as a result, by a factor that correlates directly to the Zoom factor...

iPad it's shutter, Samsung S6 it's shutter, Nexus 6p it's shutter, my previous HTC phones is shutter.

Quality drop really fast when zooming digitally. You can almost bot zoom anything if you want anything like good photos. Well the exception is if you are a person that can't see photos correctly.

I always find it odd that they don't add as many features as they do tweak the things they've already done; like the menus. They've changed them in virtually every version. Surely it doesn't take that long to add some color and change the grouping.

I don't see why they put PiP into phones. Seems like a waste of resources. I'd like to see them adapting features from other companies and incorporating them into Android.

I think your view of the notch is a little skewed :P It's really needed to increase the screen to body ratio, unless you move the camera or ear piece, both of which are stupid. It doesn't mean an Apple notch, it can be a different shape, but the requirement is there nonetheless.

Really? Most phones I have used, including my Galaxy S7, has shutter mapped to the volume button or allows you to at least change it.

Even my LG G4, which had the volume buttons on the back, allowed me to map it to shutter.

It is set to zoom by default, but you can change it to shutter.

I think they started doing shutter by default when they changed from a volume rocker to separate volume buttons.

The S9 and Mi Mix have a bigger screen to body ratio than iPhone X. The V30 and Mate 10 Pro come close.

Thinner side bezels. As you pass 90%, it becomes more necessary.

To be quite honest, I think the screen/bod ratios of the S8 and iPX are stupid.

Notch asside, I see this making phones completely unusable with certain hand sizes and with how many people hold their phones.
