Huawei mate 10 lite good?

Walt

Hi everyone,

Since my phone (iPhone 6) has a broken screen and is getting so slow I am planning on getting a new phone. I can get the huawei mate 10 lite for 300 euro. Is this a good phone and worth to buy?

My best friend says it’s worth 200 extra euros to get the one plus 5t. I was wondering is it?

Thanks!

Depends on your own definition of good. I bought an iPhone 8 Plus because it seems good to me.

What are you using the phone for? What benefits does the phone have that you can take full advantage of? What features will you use the least and most?

Compare things on GSMArena and see what the differences between the Huawei and OnePlus phone are.

Specs seems to be pretty good, except that it has a dual-core GPU so it wouldn't be good for gaming. But does anyone actually play games on a phone? :D

Thanks for the help!

Since I’m a iPhone user I have no knowledge about android. The huawei mate 10 lite has android version 7. The one plus 5T has version 8. What are the differences? And how long will version 7 be supported?

And another question: when would you consider the one plus 5T worth over the huawei mate 10 lite? The only things I will be using it for is messages/social media/watching streams and videos.

I don't know how long Android 7 will be supported, maybe a few years. Mate 10 Lite will most likely get an android 8 update.

OnePlus 5T isn't worth the 200€ price difference if your only using it for messaging and watching videos.

If the Honor 7X is cheaper, get that instead

Both phones are still on Nougat for now

EMUI 8.0 (Oreo) beta testing started only recently for 7X. No idea for Mate 10 Lite but dont expect either model to get the update before April

Why 7X instead? The Honor line is more for export, more prevalent outside of China and gets more community modding support.

I dont have either phone and I'm not affiliated to Huawei or any company in the tech industry. I'm not from Europe.

Thanks! It is 30 euros more expensive. Their basicly the same in specs right?

Android is usually supported for a very long time, I was until recently on android 4.4 and all apps worked fine. But 4.4 is already the bare minimum. I'm on android 5 now, no incompatibilities whatsoever, so android 7 will be fine for a very long time.

What is great with Huawei devices, from my point of view, is their custom skin, EMUI, which I find beautiful. iPhone users are also generally pleased as EMUI is similar to iOS.

You should be able to find the mate 10 lite for a bit cheaper on amazon (amazon.fr has it for 250e-260e, amazon.de too)

Honor 7X is basically a mate 10 lite but branded Honor. Honor is indeed more for younger people and export such as USA. Huawei is already recognized as a quality brand in Europe so just pick whichever you feel most comfortable with.

honor-7x_7ef865b232b78cbc__450_400.jpg.af543f18c61b5a1289523a9875602548.jpghuawei-mate-10-lite-64gb-4g-dual-sim-blue.thumb.jpg.26e2ed87733f60ff6ccf6ff4e3b7becf.jpg

if you're going to spend 200e more for a oneplus 5t, you're better off with a honor view 10, which costs 500e too but is slightly better (kirin 970, android 8.0 out of the box, better battery, etc etc).

Just don't worry about Android, basically, the version you get doesn't matter that much. Each version has improvements here and there but usually it won't change your experience drastically, it remains the same operating system at the end of the day. So either android 7 or 8 are good enough for the next 3/4 years and compatibility is fine. EMUI also adds little things here and there making it more pleasant, at least for me & a few people I know. Others do prefer raw android, but whatever.

Here's a comparison

For the most part they have the same hardware. If you are certain that you wont be using custom roms and community mods, get whichever looks better to you.

Since I’m not familiar with android phones. What roms and mods do you mean? Can you give me some examples?

Custom roms - Basically community made or modified versions of Android operating system. People use this for a variety of reasons; dislike/distrust of the stock operating system, to get rid of apps that the system won't let you uninstall, to gain Android features and versions that are otherwise not available, to have 'stock Android' or an operating system of other phones, performance and improved battery endurance. This category includes custom recovery for vastly improved recovery level operations; flashing of custom roms, customs apps and everything that cannot be done within Android system. Also modified kernals for low level modifications like battery profiles, CPU overclocking, screen color calibration.

Mods - Mostly system tweaks to enable hidden/locked features, modified apps made to work with the phone's hardware configuration, ported apps that are otherwise exclusive to other device models and brands. Theming and UI modifications. Also resources for rooting the phone (often there are even multiple root solutions and techniques). Some custom roms are pre-rooted.

Keep in mind most custom roms first require a custom recovery to be installed, before which the bootloader has to be unlocked. And many mods require the device to be rooted, which in turn also requires custom recovery to be installed. Custom roms and mods are made by regular folk and is not supported by the manufacturer, thus to get those into a working state often requires performing an elaborate, non-standardised list of procedures. Phone manufacturers are more interested in customers using their devices as is, and withhold a lot of software improvements (like OS versions) in hope of customers buying the next phone in order to get those improvements.

Is it common to use these roms and mods?

You lose your warranty by tinkering the OS usually. So rooting your device and such isn't the best idea either. Most people who do this do it when the manufacturer stops supporting their device. For example, I own an Ascend P6, which is a 5 years old device, and therefore, didn't get any update in the past 4 years, which is rather normal. If you search a bit, some websites have updates for it, but you'll have to root the device.

In any case, you're getting confused here with too much information.

Yes, the Mate 10 Lite is a good phone. You like it? Just get it. Don't worry about Android, it works just like Win10 or iOS. Gets a major update a year or so, that the manufacturer will choose to release or not. Personnally, I couldn't care less, if the thing works, it works, I was fine with android 4.4 for 3 years so hey, whatever.

And EMUI already offers quite a lot of customization, such as advanced battery management, skins for your phone, etc.

Hi everyone,

I am planning on getting a new phone: the huawei mate 10 lite. (I’m using an iPhone 6 now) Before I buy it for 300 euros I would like some feedback. Is it worth the money? I will use it for social media and YouTube/twitch. Is it powerful enough? And how long would it last before it gets slow?

I looked into the honor 7x but I can not get it from a normal shop with good policies.

Thanks!

The P20 Lite comes out in a couple weeks, might be worth waiting to see how that one performs. There's also the Asus Zenfone 5, might be quite a bargain depending on what they release the SD636 model for.

Youtube and Twitch I imagine take next to nothing to run.

Sometimes it comes down to the skin used by the manufacturer. The phones you're looking at might also have slower eMCC storage, instead of faster UFS storage; Huawei has a bad habit of throwing whatever's available on hand into a phone, regardless of the tier.

Sometimes it comes down to the skin used by the manufacturer. The phones you're looking at might also have slower eMCC storage, instead of faster UFS storage; Huawei has a bad habit of throwing whatever's available on hand into a phone, regardless of the tier.

Owh that’s good to know. Is there a way to check that before buying? I’m going to a physical store.

Mate 10 Lite is a good phone, good camera, good screen and great battery life. Great CPU too for everything. Don't get Android wrong: they're not slow phones, it's just people taking $100 Androids phones and talking sh*t about Android, comparing it to $700 iPhones. Android phones are pretty good, I've got the Samsung S5 for almost 4 years and recently got the Huawei Mate 10 and sincerely, the major upgrade is battery life (my S5 lasted an hour with screen on at best...) and my Mate 10 lasts 2 days (48 hours exactly) most of the times even playing some games, watching YT, Netflix, playing music... and performance is incredible, I own an iPad Air 2 and there's nothing to envy (and my whole family got iPhone 7, 6S plus and 8). It's something up to your taste. And with the $400 save you can even buy a car xD seriously, take that $400 and go on a trip with your new phone hahahahaha

But yeah, Huawei Mate 10 Lite is amazing, you can take a look at Honor View 10 (Mate 10 brother, reaaaaaaally good) but it's slightly more expensive.

That great to hear! One last question: will the mate 10 get an update to android 8 oreo? Thanks!

if you want a really good long term phone, i would get a phone known to have project tremble(which is essentially a future proof version of oreo designed to remove the issue of android devices only supporting up to X version) which the 5t doesn't have

https://www.slashgear.com/oneplus-5t-wont-get-project-treble-risk-is-too-big-07511094/

if you just want a phone that'll last two years or so, there are tons of good options in the 300 euro range, what kind of phone are you looking for?

it doesn't, its stuck in android 7.0, only specific android 8.0+ phones have this built in

you can compared phones in this site and if you use filters you can find what you're looking (besides treble, they don't list that but you can google whether or not a phone does; also they don't show certain obscure Chinese brands like the maze alpha x which i think supports oreo, but only has European bands and im in NA, i personally got a ulefone T1 (international phone) coming soon; but yeah if you have an idea of what you want you can use the sources here and if you can't find something you can type in the specs of the phone you want on like ebay, gearbest, banggood, etc. and see what deals you find ) https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_mate_10_lite-8857.php

Does every android 8 phone get this? If not so does the Huawei p20 lite get it? (If that is allready possible to know)

The mate 10 lite isn't confirmed yet to get android 8.0

The mate 10 series (mate 10 and mate 10 pro, not lite) already come with Android 8.0 out of the box. The P series flagships (P9, P10) are also getting Android 8.0.

The Mate 10 series already supports Treble: https://www.xda-developers.com/project-treble-aosp-android-oreo-huawei-mate-10-pro/

Here's a list of devices that support Treble: https://www.androidpolice.com/2017/11/26/phones-updated-support-project-treble-continuously-updated/

From what I understand, if your device includes Android 8.0 (Oreo) out of the box, it supports Treble.
