Choosing between two 2TB NVMEs for main drive

Specs:

5600x

Gigabyte 3060

Asus Tuf Gaming b550-plus

1TB Samsung 980

16 GB 3200mhz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro

I couldn't get a Corsair MP600 LPX PRO for certain reasons and now it raised from $121 to $191, now I'm choosing between the Hanye HE70 and Lexar NM970. I'm currently living in Japan but I'm not that fluent in Japanese yet so I couldn't watch or read any reviews for the Hanye HE70. I'm going to use it mostly for my OS and most of the games that I play.

What retailers are you considering buying from? If we know which ones are available to you, we can make a recommendation. There may even be better ones available around the same price.

You have a second M2 slot on your board, so you'd better add a big cheap storage NVMe (NV2, P3..) and keep your 980 as boot drive, no other drive will result in noticeable better boot time anyway

System : AMD R9  7950X3D CPU/ Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E board/ 2x32GB G-Skill Trident Z Neo 6000CL30 RAM ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 cooler (with 2xArctic P12 Max fans) /  2TB WD SN850 NVme + 2TB Crucial T500  NVme  + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD / Corsair RM850x PSU

Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / Logitech G915TKL keyboard (wireless) / Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

The problem with cheap nvme QLC storage is, it's not really that cheap.

You add like 10-15% and can get a TLC based SSD with longer life (TBW), and better write behavior not tanking to 100-200 MBps when in heavy write scenario.

I haven’t bought from any retailers except amazon yet but I’m considering trying aliexpress and maybe rakuten.

Depends of what you're planning to do : indeed for editing and stuff like that DRAM cache is nice, for gaming or office/home usage it's useless

Same for life expectancy, on standard gaming/office/home usage any drive will last 50+ years anyway, and you need to have a really heavy usage to have a drive last less than 10 years, and it'll be certainly upgraded before that anyway

IMO, a smaller drive for the OS, big fast reliable drive for the games. A OS drive doesnt NEED to be a fancy, dram cached drive, although i wouldnt touch those qlc and plc drives myself. Slc, mlc and tlc are all good, typically, across the specs/longevity/warranty board. 100 GB's for a OS is more than enough, double if not triple whats necessary. If you dont have your Windows OS locked down, its going to be writing/reading sending/receiving all the time, all day and night cause of telemetry requests from MS,Nvidia,Google,etc... and whoever else is in on the grab. Just remember that when doing youre research cause TB's written for the lifetime, warranty and the company you'll end up dealing with are all important too.

With how bad things seem to be getting with build qualities and shady rma tactics being a disease once again, you have to concern yourself with these things more than usual. Thats why i say keep the OS on a drive and EVERYTHING else on the other(s) so if it has a issue its no big deal to just wipe it and reinstall it. All youll have to do is tell Steam where the library is and point it there.

To add on this, I had this kind of setup with a smaller boot drive (a Gen4 Sabrent Rocket) and my boot drive degraded by approx 1%/year, on a rig used more than 8h/day

Hmmm so something like this should be fine? CFD SFT4000G It's a TLC one though, I'm also worrying that some unknown brands like CFD or that Hanye I asked about might slow down after I fill it up just like @kokosnh said.

I'd like at reputable brands like Kingston, Teamgroup, Crucial, Inland, if you can find them in Nippon ^^

Can you suggest other 2TB nvmes that might be in a similar or lower price range? I’ve seen people say the nand and controller of lexar nm series isn’t very reliable.

Oh I just remembered the japanese article I translated and it shows the controller and nand of the hanye he70, I guess I would need to save up more if I don’t want to risk data loss from YMTC and innogrit ;-;1749A2E8-5128-43BE-B4CA-137B584F33D8.thumb.jpeg.fd92df1875998cdbb290fb1e95e94881.jpeg

The cheapest I know of are Kingston NV2 and Crucial P3

So the  Kingston SSD NV2 2TB on amazon.co.jp  is ¥20,980 and the Crucial P3 is ¥17,152 and the Crucial P3 Plus is ¥21,768   (these are DRAMless QLC SSD)

Looked through the amazon, and here are some of the more known brands, that are OK DRAM TLC SSD

Acer Predator GM7000-2TB  ¥17,999   InnoGrit IG5236 + DDR4 + 176l TLC micron
HP FX900 Pro 2TB  ¥18.683 (15% off coupon)   InnoGrit IG5236 + DDR4 + 176l TLC micron
Kioxia exceria pro 2TB ¥19,780    Phison E18 + DDR4 + 112l TLC toshiba/kioxia
PNY CS3040 2TB  ¥20,182    Phison E16 + DDR4 + 96l TLC toshiba/kioxia
Samsung 990 PRO 2TB ¥25,990     Samsung Pascal + DDR4 + 176l/236l TLC samsung

The best one price to performance is Kioxia exceria pro, and it's cheaper than NV2 that is DRAMless QLC SSD
