trying better thermal paste

So i have a 1070 and would like to improve cooling a bit and thought of swapping out the existing arctic silver 5 paste that i am using. i came across the thermal paste round-up Tom's Hardware did and found that i could have a 4-5c decrease in temps (barring metallic compounds) compared to arctic silver 5. 

 

perhaps try the Thermal Grizzly compounds like the Kryonaut

GPUs don't have an IHS so liquid metal is sorta pointless. Just get some thermal grizzly kryonaut

AS5 is good stuff, but it has two issues. One, it's ever so slightly conductive, which means that if you squirt it all over your motherboard and give it an even coat with a soft paintbrush, you might short something. Two, it has an obscenely long burn-in period. It takes a solid couple weeks of regular on/off cycles for AS5 to really settle in, If the AS5 application is new, let it go for a while and see how it's doing. If you still want to try and get more out of the card, I like IC Diamond's cooling performance, but it scratched the shit out of a couple CPUs on me.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Correct but it doesn't have nearly the same affect as a CPU and there is more things to short out directly next to the dye

That's just because you think that the point of liquid metal is to replace the thermal compound under the IHS, which is common but not true.

Delidding is for that, and you can replace the stock compound with regular thermal paste too.

 

Liquid metal can be placed on top of the CPU where it contacts the heatsink, or between the IHS and die, or you can completely remove the IHS and run naked die with liquid metal.

Liquid metal is just an alternative to regular thermal paste and can be used wherever normal thermal paste would go as long as there is no aluminum.

 

A GPU has components around the die just like CPUs which need to be electrically insulated with some glue or electrical tape. Nothing new there.

Right I get that what I am saying though is it really isn't worth it for a GPU

I don't have any accurate measurements but my card was topping out at 83 degrees @ 100% power when mining and it dropped down to a maximum of 78 on the same settings.

Idle temperatures reduced to the 30s and after adjusting the power settings to about 70% I haven't seen it go over 70 degrees, pretty sure it helped! Especially as the old paste seemed dry and cracked

I always use MX-4 for several reason: It's one of the coldest. It's not electrically conductive. It last up to 8yrs. And, it doesn't have a curetime.

 

I put MX-4 on my GTX 1080 when I installed the NZXT G12. Max temps I've seen since the mod was 50c. It's also on my CPU w/ H100i V2 @ 5.0GHz 1.4v and temps don't rise above 75C max.
