Should I wait in case they announce a new card next month?

Hey guys. This month I've had a real urge to finally jump on the PC bandwagon after years of console gaming.

I've watched a lot of LTT youtube video's that have been super helpful.

 

My budget is ideally 1200-1500, but this all really dependant on the GPU.

I'm aiming for i7 8700k, 16gb 3000mhz corsair ram, Asus tuf mobo and all the other bits needed.

 

I was originally wanting to use the PC on my 4k HDR tv, but asking around, people say once I try a 144hz monitor for the higher frames I'll never look back.

If I bought a 1080p 144hz monitor, is a 1080ti graphics an overkill? and if so, any recommendations. 

I am hoping a phone call to a PC store tomorrow gets me the above build with a 1080ti card, but since, I've read that they may announce a new card next month.

If this is the case, should I wait for that? I know it's a very how long is a piece of string question, but I guess I don't need a PC this second.

 

Also, if they do announce a successor to the 1080ti, should the 1080ti drop in price or would the new GPU come in at a higher price. Again, I know it's a very guess type question, but rom past releases I guess there is a pattern of some sort

If they do say anything expect a release in June or late April. It is also probably going to be Pascal shrunken with GDDR6 so I wouldn't expect too much but I think the only think people want is GPUs in stock so they will take anything

according to new info Nvidia does not think the stock is going to get any better till at least Q3 this year so if you want one in 2018 now but be best but if you can wait till 2019 i would because it's so expensive.

1080p at 144hz will be fine on a 1080, and you will probably even get by with a 1070 on some games at max settings.

 

For the monitor, why not use both? Movies and youtube on the 4k tv and games on the 144hz monitor?

if you can get a 1080ti that doesn't cost 1000$ good for you personally i would stick around 1080 it will treat you just fine, 1080ti is overkill. If Nvidia does release new cards they will be sold out for a very long time don't expect to get your hands on them till 2019.

  1. IMO, getting back to the days of over 90FPS in games is much more important than any resolution will be as long as you're at 1080p. I remember when 120Hz monitors first came out in late 2009 / early 2010 - those were the days when competitive shooters actually pushed framerates (as they should be) over quality or resolution, since you need the extra frames to beat out your opponents, or even just really enjoy the fast paced action of story mode. Mind you, now that developers have shifted entirely away from making a first person shooter storyline that isn't absolute garbage, I'm not so sure it matters for single player anymore. It's all about the multiplayer DLC crate lootbox keys and a leveling system that makes zero sense to people without oodles of money to throw at a digital game after they've already paid for it. Anywho...

Eh, I mean, yes, a GTX 1080 Ti is definitely overkill for a 1080p monitor, even at 144Hz, however, if you plan to use FreeSync/Gsync, do streaming, and eventually run dual 1080p 144Hz displays, or bump up to a 1440p display, and you can afford it now, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd save some money and get a GTX 1070 instead.
     
  3. Most PC stores either won't know if a new card is coming out, or won't legally be able to disclose this information, but it might be worth asking just in case when you have them quote you on your new build.
     
  4. Should you wait? Yes, you should wait. Then, next month, if they do announce new cards, you should also remain waiting, because they could announce new cards a month after that. In fact, just never buy a GPU, because I've heard that manufacturers actually have 6-18 months of product releases ready to implement in the pipeline at all times, so they can artificially set MSRP and milk the consumer for all they're worth. Or maybe that's just Intel, who knows? The point is wait if you feel like you'll save money, or just buy what you need today and enjoy it.

In a perfect world, older hardware should indeed drop in price, because it makes absolutely no sense to pay more money for a product that does less. nVidia did this way back with the first Titan cards from 2013 when they released the GTX 900 series. A GTX 980 cost less than a Titan and performed better in most situations, yet the Titan still cost more simply because of 2GB extra VRAM over the GTX 980. Now, this is totally OK if your use-case was rendering or something that needed the VRAM, but otherwise made no sense from a consumer standpoint due to the greater performance from the GTX 980. Apple does the same thing, continuing to sell the MacBook Air at almost the same price as release date, despite it not having newer components inside it since 2015. I guess in the end it's really up to the consumer to research their purchases, but I wish manufacturers were regulated by law to put EXACT specifications on ALL products sold, including release date of individual components. That way consumers would question their purchase of a "new" Apple product that has old hardware inside it, for example.

This heavily depends on what the intended use is. Yes it may appear overkill, but in simulation programs/games maybe not so much. For example, I use a lot of flight simulators that are at real-world detail used for training and when at full graphics settings in an intensive scene you can pull in only ~30fps at 1080p with a GTX 1080.

Thanks for the responses so far!

 

In the near future, streaming may be something I'd be interested in. I've thought about it.

As for dual monitors, I've never really thought about it, and don't know what I'd gain from it really.

 

G-Sync etc, I've looked into a little. This is my first PC for gaming, so it's already gonna be costly, throw a g-sync in there and it's even more! Thats why for now, I'm probably only going get a 1080p 144hz.

 

Every day I look, the price seems to go up another 100.

Using the website PCSpecialist, I can get a really hi spec PC system for 1,700. It's a pre built offer without being able to change any of the parts inside. I will call them tomorrow and see if they will allow me to change the SSD and HDD which will bring the cost down to 1,550. It's a long shot, but worth a try. The same PC without the offer and a 1070ti instead of a 1080ti right now would cost the same, so if they do let me do this, then it'll be hard to pass.

 

If not, it may be worth waiting until the nVidia announcement. Either way at the end of March comes the easter sales as well I suppose, so may work well for a monitor etc

Depend on the game you'll run at 1080. For exemple, AC Origin will not be overkill with this kind of system if your aiming for 144fps even at 1080p. If you plan on playing overwatch at 144fps aat 1080, yes the 1080ti is way overkill !

1. The next gen card will be better

Usually, the XX70 will = the XX80ti of the previous version... in my case my 980ti perform similarly to a 1070, except for the consumption.

I would buy a next gen XX70 over a 1080ti at this point ...

Game wise I'm not sure. I'm gonna be learning the KB/Mouse so not wanting to dive into competitive gaming right away. Mostly just single player games. Skyrim, Fallout type etc. To be honest, with the amount of PC games out there, I'm sure I'll discover some great ones.

 

Looking at wiki. The release dates seem all over the place

 

1070 = June 16

1080 = May 16

1080ti = March 17

1070ti = November 17

 

Wiki could be wrong, but you'd have thought the 1070ti would have come before the 1080ti. So confusing
