Sleep or Shut Down

Hey, I was wondering what to do after a solid session on the pc, should I be putting it to sleep or completely shut it down. (concerned about life of pc)

P.S I have an integrated power button on the top of the case. 

P.P.S I am in school so I don't get back on for at least 15+ hours.

Don't be concerned about life span if it's idle. I usually just leave mine on all the time. About 1-3 months at a time until windows update manages to reboot it or the power goes out

I say it's better for the computer if you just leave it on all the time. My instructor for my computer class who has been working for HP for 25years also says the same. Turning it off and back on wears down the whole system because each time you power it on, it's a mini surge to the system. 

 

If you'd be worried about power consumption and a spike in electricity bill prices, your system should be barely using any power at all idling. Most computers are pretty efficient today.

It's not just the PC in sleep mode though - monitor, speakers. Look at that across 3 PC's in the house plus the home theater system. You're starting to look at a 60w+ bulb being on 24/7, looking at $35 a quarter in power that you don't actually use..

I'd shut it down or put it in hibernate mode. It won't damage anything when it turns on, and I've been doing it ever since I started using computers.

 

Plus, hibernate mode saves everything to the hard drive instead of the RAM, so if the power happens to go out, nothing will be lost. It's faster than shutting the PC down as well.

Well, no, it's def not adding up to 60w.

Both HTPCs idle at about 1.5w, the 3 PC monitors stand by at 1w, the 65" TV sleeps at 1w.  It's more like 9.5w, that's a lot less than 60w. o.O

Well, I mean, I do have a server that idles at about 60w (More like 120w if the drives are all spinning) that I do keep running 24/7 but it handles downloads and other critical services all day.  So that DOES eat power but it's a fair bit more efficnet having all that in one machine.  But as a result I keep my network gear running too obviosly.

But anyway, the crux, and where we both agree, is that even just sleeping, OR doing more, your electronics can save a considerable amount of power consumption.  Especially if, being idle, your computers aren't actually DOING anything for you.

Which is money ofc, but not really relevant - which is relevant is the INCREASED lifespam that I get. I live near the beach, and when left off some sea salt tends to acumulate and cause pc death in some time. Since leaving it on ALWAYS, my pc lives 2-3x more. Totally worth it.

Unless you were planning on using the same exact PC as the workhorse for 10+ years, that wear and tear isn't going to matter.

I'm not arguing the very use of the system degrades itself, that's how everything works. But the low cost to just keep it at idle 24/7 isnt a good argument to constantly turn it off and on when you want to use it. Cars are expensive to keep running 24/7. So because something is cheap means it's okay to be wasteful to prevent something that's practically a non-issue?

 

The thing with component failures is nobody has done any real formal study on the matter. For all intents and purposes, ICs have a lifespan of "indefinite".

The energy plants will still be making electricity regardless if you keep your PC on or not, that's my argument. And a few extra watts wont change their job in the slightest. I've no idea what else to respond with, the waste is insignificant.
