Samsung will still have to buy Exynos processors from Samsung. Yeah, sounds ridiculous but they're separate companies. Probably still cheaper though.

 

I'm actually not sure how much performance impacts sales. I think most consumers just want a phone that works and a phone that's fast. Which most phones are today.

 

With that being said: single threaded performance is still so important for many things including web browsing. So it should be noticeable if Samsung can fix their shit. They don't have a lot of time though. Pre-orders should be in the hands of consumers in 10 days.

No, it doesn't.

 

In GSMArena's battery test suit (which is a mix of calls, movie watching, web browsing and idle time) the results looks like this:

iPhone 8 - 66h

iPhone X - 74h

Galaxy S8 - 84h

Galaxy Note 8 - 89h

 

So while Apple might be faster than Samsung in performance benchmarks, the iPhones also have significantly shorter battery lives.

h as in hours? Is it like 2 minutes of videos and calls then the rest idle? There is no phone that lasts almost 4 days on a single charge

I can't remember exactly how they calculate that single value, but I know a big portion of it is idle time (just like in real usage for most users).

I'm actually not sure how much performance impacts sales. I think most consumers just want a phone that works and a phone that's fast. Which most phones are today.

 

With that being said: single threaded performance is still so important for many things including web browsing. So it should be noticeable if Samsung can fix their shit. They don't have a lot of time though. Pre-orders should be in the hands of consumers in 10 days.

IK it's separate divs but the money goes into the same big org. I'd imagine costs are the reasons Samsung tends to use the Exynos CPUs outside of the CPUs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like the issue with this thing is heat, it's a monster as long as it's got airflow but once you package it up inside a phone it's not able to maintain max performance.

 

Active cooling phones when? Anybody want to guess?

No, it's not 2 hours.

It's about 2 hours if you sit down with your phone at 100%, and then use it until it's at 0%.

The Galaxy phones has significantly longer standby time so in mixed workloads (some browsing, some video watching, some calling and lots of time spent idling in your pocket) there is quite the big difference.

 

But that's not really the point. My point was that you should not assume that Apple are best at everything just because they are Apple, which you did.

It's pretty impressive jump from any other Android chip. Great to see it in line with Apple chip. Those certain benchmarks do show to be very weird. Probably something off from demo unit. Would need to see follow up later on.

It boosts to 2.9 ghz when running single core stuff but when using more than 1 core then it boosts to lower clock speeds (for example when 4 cores are loaded it only boosts to 1.8 ghz, resulting in power only 10-20% higher than when a single core is loaded).

Yeah its way more than 2 hours real world. In my area I am one of few who uses Android and I can go out with my friends and by 7pm my S8+ is still at 50% while they have their phones plugged in. 

 

I just dont understand the hype or bragging rights the A11 chip brings. Like sweet, cool benchmark numbers. But place an S8 side by side to an X and do a general speed test, and an S8 would match or in most cases(not gaming) beat the iphone even though it benches half of the X.

Minor nitpick: 2.7 GHz. The 2.9 was the case for the reference design. Historically reference designs are clocked higher than what ends up in actual products. Probably an adjustment to get the best power/performance ratio.

The extra muscle really only shows in gaming or in CPU-intensive workloads like video exports or exporting multiple Lightroom edits.

 

In basic use, even an Apple A9 or Snapdragon 630 will do the job more than dandy.

 

I forced myself to use a cheapo piece-of-crap phone and despite the bad software, the SD430 was decent for normal use, albeit pretty slow at times.
