what thermal paste is best for my needs

I am going to be receiving my new air cooler, a dark rock pro 3, soon, but my system is a prebuilt, so I don't know what thermal paste is best for my needs, the cooler is used, and a quick search showed the best as thermal grizzly kryonaut, however I am trying to get the best possible paste without much risk when I inevitably fuck it up, I am using an intel i7 6700k and have no issues with shelling out a little more if it means the paste will work well

Kryokaut is pretty much up there, other than going for something like Conductonaut which is liquid metal. Some other good ones also such as MX-4, Gelid Extreme, IC diamond are also good options.

I'm using the Kryonaut at the moment though, I only have an i-5 6600k @4.5 so, that makes a bit less heat.

I'm getting around max 60-62 in stress tests with my Dark Rock 3 (non-pro)

is that celsius or farenheit, if that's celsius I might want to go to another paste

Celsius yeah. I don't think others will get it too much lower either. People usually recommend MX-4 as well though, I never used it before.

TBH any thermal paste will work fine, as long as it isn't Intel's special toothpaste. I use Arctic Silver 5 and Cryorig CP7. (Included with H7 cooler)

Those are perfectly reasonable temps you won't see huge difference between thermal pastes maybe a couple of degrees at most.

alright, I'm only upgrading because the heatsink in my system is an intel stock heatsink, and I've been seeing temps upwards of 80+ on certain cpu heavy games like Nier;Automata and others

Oh you don't have to worry then going from the stock cooler to the massive Dark Rock Pro will provide much better temps not to mention being able to overclock. Don't forget at 60-62C that is an overclocked 6600K not at stock speed.

If you are dealing with a large die or IHS it really doesn't matter in the slightest so long as you use a decent thermal paste.

If you are dealing with a small die or in between a die and an IHS use a thick paste or liquid metal. This is really where things get tricky. In these conditions most pastes dry out prematurely or pump out from the center of the die. Ceramique, icdiamond, or liquid metal tend to last the longest in that situation.
