I'm trying to pick up the scraps from cryptocurrency, and try to mine. Which card is better for mining now, and then maybe gaming later. I'm probably going to go for the 390, but what do you think?

GTX 980 doesnt have 6GB version

 

R9 390 draws enough power to push the moon out of orbit and generates enough heat to accelerate global warming, so that's not a good option

980 because it's better in efficiency, but I hear Maxwell cards dont mine well due to its architecture

AMD is better for mining ethereum, but probably 980 is better for gaming.

This. The 390 will run rings around Maxwell in just about any cryptocurrency, but the 980 will outperform it in most games.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Mining with one card, especially a 980 isn't profitable. Why don't you just want one for gaming?

Not really, a 390x, 980 and 1060 6gb are all within 10% in gaming.

I'd go with the 390 if it has a really good cooler, otherwise don't bother.  The 980 won't literally melt the shroud of a blower card.

I agree. You might make enough money after electricity bill to fill up a half a tank of gas, but aside from that it’s really not worth it IMO.

I have a 390 and it holds its ground respectable against my friends 1080. Seeing as I paid 150 for the 390 and he paid over 600 for his card, I am extremely happy with my decision.
