Hello,

When building my computer I bought 16GB of DDR4 Ram at 2400mhz. However, when I received my ram and viewed it in the bios it told me the speed was 2133. I wasn't sure if this was a normal occurrence when buying ram, but if I could have saved money buying 2133mhz ram, why did I get recommended 2400mhz ram?

Kinda, kinda not.

It's legit, but misleading.

It will have settings for 2400mhz in XMP profile 1.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

You have to set it to 2400MHz in the UEFI. There's probably an XMP/DOCP profile for it. If not, just change the speed to 2400MHz and you should be fine.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Set the XMP profile

So could I have bought 2133mhz ram and changed it to 2400mhz in the bios, therefore saving me money?

No, that would be overclocking

this isn't

So would overclocking be a problem then? Actually could i change my ram speed now to be 2666mhz? Would that make things any different?

That would probably void your warranty, but not much else

Check with your manufacturer

Yes and no, anything over 2133 is technically overclocking from a standard perspective.  XMP while technically overclocking is more of a "factory overclock" which is set and forget so non-technically it isn't overclocking.

I have a set of 3600 gskill which has a chip capable of extreme overclocking, I got them after research and while I had grand OC plans.  When I first got my z270 board they wouldn't go over 2400 even on xmp.  A few UEFI updates later and they are sitting pretty at 3600 with no effort.

There are two factors at play here, binning and xmp.  XMP would be a coordination between motherboard manufacturers and memory producers to agree on a solid speed with proper settings that every stick they produce will achieve.  Binning would be the same chips through the same memory producers only they cherry pick the one's that will hit higher speeds.

This is where overclocking comes into play.  The most dedicated of us could technically get 2133 stick's to run over 4000, the only difference being time spent tweaking and testing not to mention silicone lottery.

When I started overclocking I had budget memory capable of a rated 133mhz which I managed to push to 222 cas2 and 235 cas2.5  At that time there were sticks capable of 250-300 but I didn't have that chip or the mb/cpu to push that.  I spent an ass load of time tweaking and testing to get the speeds that I did.

My overall point is, first you need to research the chip being used, second you need to either spend a huge amount of time tweaking and testing or pay for the higher clocked sticks.  And third, and most important to this thread, what you pay always takes away from user effort.  That's either in research of the product, time spent tweaking/testing, or silicone lottery.

Look at the label on your ram stick. Says 2400MHz, then you got what you have purchased.

Product's come with warranties.  If it fails before the warranty you contact the manufacturer and provide proof of purchase.

Overclocking used to void warranties, these day's it's an accepted area of the hobby.

RAM overclocking doesn't void warranties
