What Smartwatch to get?

I've been using a Pebble Time Round for about two years (technically two since the batteries go to shit after about a year), but the battery is completely shot so I need something new to replace it. I don't really have a budget in mind.

  • It needs to work with iOS.
  • Battery life needs to be at least 2 day.
  • It needs to look good (and be compatible with a metal band)

Apple Watch Series 3. Does everything you want. Battery life is about 4-5 days and with gps use during a workout like running or biking then 2-3 days

According to Apple it's only 18 hours, and any review I've seen puts it at around 1-2 days.

I think what you are looking for is an Apple Watch, I have one and it works great. Only down fall is that I want to jump off the Apple bandwagon and get a new android phone, Getting a new phone would mean I would have to get an android counterpart.

4-5 Days? Do you have yours turned off for 3 of them? I get almost exactly 48 hours out of mine. I charge it every other day (Usually while in the shower) and only takes 30 minutes to charge so it isn't that big of deal.

 

Fitbit has the best battery life when it comes to their wearable, Those last 4-5 days and that is with the Heart Rate monitor always on. This is something the apple watch does not do, it only takes 1 or 2 readings per hour to conserve battery.

That doesn't sound right at all. If it's at 100% when I put it on in the morning when I go to sleep it's usually around 82%-79%. Then sleeping with it on usually drops it by 2%-4$. On average without working out it goes down 20% a day. That's putting the watch on at 6:30pm and taking it off 11pm btw. I have gone 3 days without charging and it was at 11% on the 3rd day. I sorta wanna make a video on it because 18 hour sounds so wrong. The LTE version will probably last 18 hours and if you use it as a phone 8 hours. But using it as a normal smart watch, turning on hue lights, asking siri something, checking notifications, and time throughout the day should last 3 days. You can also charge the thing when you get home

The Pebble 2 has a 7 day battery iirc, so its battery should last a lot longer. The problem with the PTR is that it normally would only get 2 days of battery life, which means you're going to burn through cycles very quickly, and without a lot of over provisioning that will lead to fast battery degradation. 

 

Anyway, all I can say is that I had two PTRs and both batteries lasted a bit less than one year and then degraded rapidly. 

 

Day 1: 48 hour battery life.

Day 280: 43 hours or so.

Day 340~: 20-24 hour battery life (Pebble replaced my PTR for free).

Hell, I just learned that after putting the watch on you can unlock the device by unlocking your phone. I have been putting the pass code every time I put my watch back on :P

I got the cellular apple watch series 3, and I think it's the best choice for a smartwatch currently. Battery life is around 2-3 days, and the cellular feature is nice if I'm just driving somewhere and I don't feel like bringing my phone. 

 

Only thing I wished it did was putting gifs as a watch face (I think you can on Samsung's Smart Watch) but that can be addressed in a software update.

The smartwatch is an interesting area, I had honestly given up on replacing my PTR and I actually just bought a nice watch instead, but I really don't know how I feel about giving up a smartwatch, it's just really nice having that little bit extra. I liked the look of the original Huawaei Watch from 2015, but I hated the new version, and I wasn't sure how well Android Wear worked with iOS and most reviews seemed to put the battery life at well under 2 days. Plus I didn't really want to spend $300~ on a smartwatch, although my opinion might be changing a bit on that last bit.

 

I really dislike the look of the Apple Watch, although I may pick one up and try it for a week and decide whether I like it.

i used the hawawei watch around launch loved the look of it.  the no autobrightness was a tad annoying but allowed for no flat tire screen.  it seemed a little early on software front so i got rid of it after a month. hoping the next year or two would have a new version. Nothing happened since :/  LG watch style seemed to replace it on googles website and looks like an good watch for the price just little cheaper looking 

 

 

seems like it should support android wear 2.0 which supports ios. i have no first and in that type of cross platform though

it's apple... so... price tags gonna be up there, 

 

when it comes to looks I think it is really personal. 

I think the apple watch is the best one out there when it comes to design as well as function. 

 

but truth be told I never look into any sort of android wear before.

i might get an apple watch in the future depends on how many times I am gonna spend each week exercising. If it is high enough, I will get one. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Jeez, I wonder if its something to do with the batteries used in the PTR as my pebble time still lasted over 4 days after owning it for a year. Too bad my time will not charge with third party cables (as I accidentally destroyed the original cable) so I can no longer use it :/.

My assumption is it's because the battery in the PTR is small and likely with no over provisioning. So it degrades quickly, which ultimately leads to even faster degradation.

The S3 is better than the S2 unless you get the S3 with LTE. I was in the same boat as you when the first and second watch came out thinking how stupid a watch is when it can’t even last a whole day. My friend has a used S2 and it lasts about 2 days

I might pick up a Garmin Vivoactive 3 and try it out. It's cheaper, but more importantly it looks much nicer (and on paper the battery life is supposedly much longer when not using GPS). There's obviously no Apple Pay though, which is a bit of a downer, but not a huge deal.
