GTX 970 - Worth it?

Tz000

Found a GTX 970 Asus Strix 4GB used for $220.00 CAD. Question to everyone is do you think its worth that price in today's market?

It seems to do quite well for 1080P (Med/High) / 1440P (Low/Med) against the RX 580's / 1060's based on the benchmarks I have seen.  Considering those GPU's are well over 400.00$ at the moment I thought the price/performance numbers looked alright..  The GPU is going to be for my girlfriends PC she uses it mainly for Graphic design (Indesign, Photoshop etc) and some light gaming (COD,Sims) on her Benq 1440p 60hz 27" Ips monitor.  Essentially this card is a place holder for the next year or so until something new comes out at a half decent price (hopefully).

Has anyone owned this card is it capable of running games such as call of duty/battlefield 1 on low settings 1440p 60hz?  I am also able to overclock it a bit to squeeze some more performance out of it..

Any input, experiences etc much appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Given that the GPU market is currently in the trash, it's worth it, though it doesn't quite beat the 1060. I would also suggest that you keep your eye out for a GTX 980.

Yeah, I'd do it. That's about what I'm spending on a 970. With GPU prices what they are, you can't really ask for much better. I've seen a lot of people trying to get in excess of $300 for their 970's, which is frankly ridiculous.

It'll easily handle 1080p. Remember, most game tests are done on Ultra/Max settings, which are frankly not needed. Dropping to high with some other slight tweaks can give you much better performance, with virtually the same overall experience.

Well I've got a gtx 1070 and a 165 hz 1440p display, I just played for a few minutes in Battlefield 1 with the settings on low and the fps was pasted to the ceiling at 165 with less than 80% GPU usage most of the time. So even if the 1070 was twice as good as the 970, and it's actually only about 61% better(see screenshot 177/110 is approximately 1.61), you be able to hit at least 80 fps on a 1440p display. Yes it's capable of hitting your targets but in the long run, you might want to save that money and get a better gpu once Volta comes out. Also you can usually lower display scaling to where it's approximately 1080p in game to get better than low quality graphics.image.thumb.png.049008c5f59763b0c7ac9b5baa044e1c.pnge

Yeah I had a 980 lined up but haven't heard anything and the 970 seller is letting me see it function etc so I think it will be a decent buy for now. Thanks for your input.

Excellent thanks for the detailed info + numbers always helps alot.

I do plan on getting volta cards once they come out as well as upgrade our two ryzen 1600's to the new 7nm processors in 2019 but what we have now should float us through 2018 quite well!

Cheers guys picking up the 970 on Wednesday hopefully all goes well.
