What low end cpu?

Hi I am looking for a new low end cpu, I am looking at cpu's like the i5 7400 or the ryzen 1400/1300x which low end cpu would be best for fast light workstation use? and if you have any other cpu ideas that would be great, budget is from about 100 dollars to about 180, thanks.

If you need it now, R5 1400. If you can wait, i3-8100 and an H310 board will be a pretty compelling pair when those H310 boards arrive.

I3 8100 as soon as H310 boards drop, its faster than the I5 7400 and single core should see you better off in most tasks than the 1600s 6 cores and 12 threads unless your productivity stuff is like video work

r5 1600 is the best value there is for any kind of multi-threaded use.

It just depends. If he's not planning on doing any gaming on the machine, I'd lean toward an R5-1600 since it really is an order of magnitude better in terms of multithreaded performance than Intel's 4c/4t CPU's. It will allow him the ability to do more with the machine as his needs grow.

 

If he wants to game I'd lean Intel, but if not, AMD for sure. 12 threads is tasty for working.
