Enabling XMP - Status: Solved

Go to solution Solved by AlexTheGreatish,

I'd recommend avoiding XMP, it can work well if you only plan to overclock your RAM but it can make the system unstable if you're overclocking the CPU too. Manually overclocking should get you better results.

Hey guys,

My RAM is rated at 3GHz operation. However, it's running at 2.1GHz. By enabling XMP, the RAM will operate at the advertised speeds of 3GHz (or 3000MHz). With this feature enabled, will I notice a performance increase? And yes, I am aware of the Intel kernel bug.

System specs:

CPU: Intel core i7-6700K

CPU Cooler: be quiet Silent Loop 280mm AIO

MOBO: Gigabyte z170x Gaming 6 rev 1.0

MOBO BIOS Version: F22

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3000MHz

Storage: Samsung 960 Pro 512GB NVMe SSD and 2TB Seagate SSHD

PSU: ThermalTake ToughPower series 750w

GPUs: Gigabyte GTX950 factory overclocked configured in SLI (I am aware of the fact that my GPUs are significantly underpowered compared to the rest of the system. Because GPUs change so frequently, I wanted to make sure that the rest of my PC was very future proof. The GPUs will be upgraded to something that can run 4K smoothly.

There will be an increase in permormance but higher ram speeds would be more noticeable with an amd cpu.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600, MB: Asus Crosshair VI Hero, RAM: Kingston 2×8GB, GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB, Storage: Samsung PM981 1TB

True, but for my case, will performance be noticeable outside of benchmarks?

I do plan on over locking the CPU to 4.5GHz as soon as the warranty expires.

Lol 'over locking'

Lol, this is exactly what happened, My SSD performed worse, my CPU temperatures raised from the load being at 45°C to 53°C and the system booted much slower. i'll keep it disabled for now.

Enable XMP, reboot back into the BIOS, take note of all the values in the RAM config (timings, freq, etc), and disable XMP. Enter all of the values you were given manually.
