Wiping a hard drive

I need to wipe my mom's laptops hard drive and re-install windows on it. How should I go about wiping it? I've never really done it before... Weird seeings how I've built like 4 or 5 computers but yeah help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Boot into GParted or the Windows installation disk and format the disk.

Just reformat, as you are continuing to use it and there is no sensitive data. Use either the windows installer or a linux live CD.

Yup in the windows instillation, There will be a point where it asks you to select a partition. Just select anything there and click delete. then Create a new one and your done.

Well, actually, I decided I am going to use Ubuntu because she wants to program in C/C++ and use it for that, and Ubuntu is free and comes with a built in compiler and its very minimalist. And I can't get the computer to load windows right now so if I want to wipe it I can't actually get into it...

when installing ubuntu, it'll give you the option to delete windows. just select it. and the installer will do everything else

What does one have to do with the other? You don't need to know how to reinstall windows to be a programmer.
