?

Is that network issue or congestion?

I keep hearing that TPG, like dodo, are one of those RSP's that keep their prices low by not buying enough data to cover what they sell.   If you ever swap to a more reputable RSP let us know if your speed changes.

ok so TV watching has switched from being cable/satellite based to internet based. we knew this was going to happen eventually... it's the only logical way to get things like real 4K shows/movies on your fancy new 4K TV.

the entire Cable/satellite infrastructure is the old way of doing things. everything now uses IP.

This isnt surprising seeing how cable is going away as people are getting fed up paying the prices and how 4k content can be had on the cheap and top that off with more access to this content on the go. Right now 60% on our 20Gb/s trunk is pure streaming. On another point, I dont see it jumping 4 or hell even 2 fold in the future (until 8k at least)

The jump for us has a lot to do with almost no one using online streaming services, youtube was a thing ages ago but wasn't a big data user, to basically everyone using Netflix in 2 years.

I've personally always used a lot of data but it was rare 2-3 years ago for the common home to use more than 40GB, now it's rare to not use 40GB and the average is only that low due to people who don't yet have UFB or people like my grandparents who make up a large portion of the country. If they excluded the rural homes and people over 65 I'm willing to bet the average is actually over 100GB. Even my own parents regularly use 80GB of data a month and most of that is Netflix or Plex.

What is your monthly use?

Wow the average is surprisingly low in NZ, I would have expected it to be around ~250GB/month. My average tends to be between 400-600GB, but on the rare occurrence that I install a new OS and install my steam library, usage can easily exceed 1TB. Not too sure what my average was around 2014, but if I had to estimate, it would likely be ~100GB. (Hurrah for mass media consumption!)

Don't forget we're all on the upper end of data usage because of who we are ;). I can tell you I often use 100GB-200GB per day but it varies so I can't give you an accurate monthly number, being unlimited means I don't actually care or look, I'm not even sure how or if I can.

I'm actually kind to my ISP and be mindful of their cost and limit my activity per month or keep the big stuff to night time, if I stopped caring and just went for it I'd likely get cut off under the fair use terms (if I wasn't on a business plan at home that doesn't have those conditions :)).

And then there's my house, sitting at a comfy 900GB-1TB a month. :P

Well that sucks, I initially had problems getting fibre due to shared driveway issues and Chorus didn't bother putting VDSL in to the cabinet for my area even though every block one over from us did get it. I initially solved that by getting long range 100Mbps wireless so that might be an option for you if anyone in your area offers it.

Full solution ended up buying a house where I could get it.

P.S. Chorus is so bloody useless, won't even use a new unused duct to put the fibre through because they don't know if it's clear all the way to the end and they only have short scoping cables. Bunch of idiots also won't connect a single house and must be all houses on the access way or none.

Hohhhmyyygoodd tell me about it.

Had fibre down the street for god knows how long now. But no, down a drive and apparently everyone has to buy in. Mates a few blocks over have VDSL but not us apparently, although admittedly I haven’t looked too deeply into why.

We own in South Auckland so moving isn’t really an option unless we leave town.

Honestly the ADSL does the job for most things I do, it’s only when downloading a new game I think “Oh... should probably do something about that”.

I once hit 12TB in a single month >.>

I average between 1TB to 2TB though, mostly closer to the 1TB mark than 2 but sometimes it goes up a bit.

What is your monthly use? Why? Keen to know!

Usage would be higher if I was home more often and/or didn't have a baby to look after. Usage is supplemented with girlfriend's Netflix usage.

No, that's ADSL2+ with 3.4km of copper to the exchange. The former result is a typical evening speed.

So it's actually both :(.  What PITA.    Hopefully you get a node close to you soon.
