You'll also need RAM (Minimum 8GB RAM or 1GB per 1TB of storage, whichever is higher)
Power Supply (400W should be enough but try and get one that is efficient since it will be operating 24/7)
A USB flash drive to use as a boot drive (at least 8GB, 16GB recommended)
An enclosure. An old PC case will be fine
And whatever HDDs you're using

For set up you will also need a monitor and keyboard (if possible use a PS/2 keyboard for compatibility)

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

You need some ddr4 Ram, a power supply, a pc case, heatsink , hdds and a grafik card.

so you miss quite a lot of parts.

If you have not a lot of experience & money, it may be better to buy an old NAS or storage server from ebay.

Something like an proliant microserver, they are nice to set up Freenas. I run a DL180 g7 with Freenas, it's easy to install if you follow the instalation guid.

The MSI H110M Pro and the G4400 CPU have intel onboard graphics so a dedicated graphics card shouldn't be required.

It's worth noting that the H110M Pro motherboard only has 4x Sata III ports. If you are planning on using more than 4 HDDs then you will need to purchase a PCI SATA III expansion card.

You will also need a gigabit capable router/switch to connect your other devices to the NAS.

For OS I would recommend FreeNAS.

Used it before and it's great. It has a built in library for third party plug-ins like Plex Media Server and OwnCloud, along with great built in features for SMB sharing and so on.

One thing to note: FreeNAS uses ZFS file storage, and it is recommended that you have at least 1GB of memory for every 1TB of storage.

You can use Ubuntu server as an alternative. A little bit more work to set up than FreeNas (but not that much) and much more flexible.  And 4GB should be more than enough for what you are doing.

Also I'd strongly recommend not just using drives you have laying around. A drive is the most important part of a NAS. This is where you want to spend your money. Get drives designed for NAS like WD Reds (or the Seagate equivalent which I forget the name of), get new drives, get all the same size.

no this has to get debunked every time ZFS is brought up, so I'm a little tired of it.
