Too comfy to get up? Redbox On Demand is here. Watch new releases right now without getting off the couch:

from Redbox. It's in a public Beta (in America) at the moment.

http://www.redbox.com/ondemand-movies

Hereis a link to the Engadget article,

Quote

The last time Redbox tried online video in earnest it... didn't go so well. The company's Redbox Instant was effectively trying to challenge Netflix head-on, which seemed foolhardy even in 2013. After lots of teasing, though, it's ready for a comeback. It's launching a Redbox On Demand service that offers movies and TV shows (notably, including new releases) for purchase or rent -- it's steering clear of subscriptions this time.

it is about a week old but I never heard anything on the subject till today. I remember back in the day when I think Redbox teamed up with Verizon? Way back when...

The original Redbox Streaming service was subscription based and as I recall didn't offer the latest movies for streaming. It would appear that you can now get the latest movies on a per movie basis.

Personally, I don't see this doing all that great. (Kind of like last time), but I suppose it gives the user another alternative to Netflix, Hulu, Roku, Amazon, and whatever Disney/fox is coming out with. It will be interesting to see if the RedBox streaming service takes off this time.

Quote

On Demand service is available on the Redbox website, the Redbox app for Android and iOS-enabled devices, as well as Apple TV, Chromecast, LG and Samsung Smart TVs, and Roku®. ...

Pricing for new-release On Demand rentals start as low as $3.99 for 48-hour VOD rentals and $9.99 for EST transactions

When creating a thread in the News subforum, please make sure your post meets the following criteria:

  • Your thread must include some original input to tell the reader why it is relevant to them, and what your personal opinion on the topic is. This needs to be MORE than just a quick, single comment to meet the posting guidelines.
  • Your thread must include a link to at least one reputable source. Most of the time, this should be a respected news site.
  • Your thread should also include quotes from the cited source(s). While you shouldn't just copy the entire article, your quote should give the reader a summary of the article in a way that gives the key details, but also leaves room for them to read the full article on the linked website. Please use quote tags to show that you have copied this content from another site.
  • The title of your thread must be relevant to the topic and should give a reader a good idea of the contents of the thread. Had a look, on the Google play store I go to install and it says NONE of my devices are compatible, I have a shield TV (nvidia tegra x1), shield tablet (tega k1), Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (snapdragon 635). So not sure on what they are hoping people have on their devices to use these apps?  of course it could be an unrelated problem why you can't install the apps, but I can't be arsed to find out what that might be right now... maybe as it's still in beta? but the app linked by them isn't the beta one, so not sure what's going on here at all.

So this is more of a Google Video/iTunes Store/Amazon Video/Vudu competitor.

Digital rentals and purchases.

I mean, more competition is good, but I’m not confident it will do much better when you can already rent or buy most movies and tv shows digitally from a dozen other services.

I would actually prefer another Netflix subscription based competitor.

The subscription streaming industry is moving towards consolidation (mostly by the content owners offering direct), on a more exclusive basis.

And I think that’s bad for consumers. I want to be able to choose between Amazon Prime, Netflix, CraveTV (Canadian Hulu basically), Hulu (Canada? Please?), etc - and have a similar selection on all of them. I don’t want to have to subscribe to a dozen services to get the content I want, because one service has an exclusive license.

I wish we could get crave TV here in the states.... I would literally pay for it to watch nothing else other Letterkenny. I'm just sayin'...

When I first read the title, I read it as "Redbox (is) Streaming Returns".  I spent several minutes trying to figure out what "Returns" meant and why I'd care that they're streaming it, LOL.

I mean, I have a CraveTV subscription so I can watch Star Trek Discovery (Apparently everywhere else in the world outside of the US can get it on Netflix... but fuck you Canada because Bell Media owns the broadcast rights to Star Trek in Canada).

But the service is pretty subpar, aside from whatever exclusives it has. The App sucks, and will randomly give you errors, forcing you to restart a show. The website also sucks, for much of the same reason. The layout is terrible, and confusing, and not intuitive. And App selection is also terrible. It's on XBOX, but not on Roku? Like doubleyou tea eff, bruh?

Also I don't want Letterkenny, so there's that xD:P

That's very weird, maybe they are only supporting devices from some basic whitelist. (My Nexus 5x is supported even though its running a custom rom) That or could it be a region lock? (Doubting this possibility)

I'm 99% sure it's US only...

I would almost guarantee it's a region lock. I don't think the beta is even available outside of the US at this point.

And since it's in beta, the app could simply be buggy, and they haven't confirmed broader Android compatibility yet.

Oh well, I can wait and see if it is because of beta... or if I'll never get it because of region restrictions.. but am pretty sure that when it's regional restrictions, you usually just can't find it on the store at all, unless they changed that?

If it IS region specific, then I REALLY WISH that they would fucking say that on their advertisements or at the very least on the app store, say "Only available in blah blah blah!"

Oh well, guess I just have to keep hoping that a decent service will come along one day.
