Best Performance Per Dollar High-End CPU?

I currently have a I5 4690K, and am looking to upgrade either to a new Intel or AMD chip. I was considering getting a I7 7700K, but I have a increased budget now. So im trying to decide if the new 8700K is worth the money, or if the i5 8600K would be good enough and if I should just save the money.

From what I have gathered so far, I think that AMD is out of the question when it comes to this price range. From what I have seen benchmark wise, the Ryzen chips dont stand a chance agaist the 8700K.

Mainly the chips im looking at are

i7 7700K

i7 8700

I7 8700K

i5 8600K

And im totally open to any other recommendations!

I recently picked up a 1070 ti from a friend, and I just want something to make my rig completely future proof.

I play video games really, nothing insanely demanding, like streaming, or video rendering. But I would like to make sure that the choice I get doesn't limit me in the future. But I dont want to just go out and buy the most expensive thing if its not needed.

Thanks for any help from anyone! Its appreciated! If you need more information, or questions or anything just let me know!

I think the best budget CPU Intel has to offer right now is the i5-8400, although if you're going to Coffee Lake you might as well get an 8600K/8700K since all the current boards at Z370. For your case, I would recommend the 8600K or a Ryzen 5 1600

i would just try to find a used 4770K or 4790K and i would sell the core i5 to help pay for it...that way you wouldnt need a new motherboard and new RAM.

If you want the best performance, buy the best chip.

If you care about performance per dollar, the Ryzen series kicks the 8700's ass right out of the ballpark.  Best price to performance for the latest generation is the Athlon X4 950, then the Ryzen 3 1200 followed by the Ryzen 5 1600.  For Ryzen 7, go for the 1700X, which is still a much better p/p value than any of the new Intel offerings.

If you can afford it, just get the 8700K, no regrets.

If you go by performance per dollar you will end up buying an older less powerful CPU, because the performance per dollar just keeps going up the older you go. High performance per dollar doesn't mean that you should buy it.

x5650 is by far the best 6 cores 12 threads easily overclockable to hit single core perf just below a 3770 and cpu and motherboard bundled will cost around low $200 range sometimes with ram included.

You're correct, OP. Ryzen doesn't hold a candle to Coffee Lake in gaming. My suggestion is to either sell your 4690K and grab a used 4790K (they're still fantastic processors), or go for an 8600K or 8700K. Of course, the latter option will give you the absolute best performance available, but the 4790K will still give you a nice jump for heavily-threaded games.

I personally would just grab an 8600K or 8700K.

The higher the resolution, the less important CPU cores are, and also, future compatibility is better term than "future-proof".

Excellent point.  The way intel has been going is the prime reason I picked AM4 / Ryzen, AMD is more likely to keep the same socket in use for a while.

Do you live near a micro centre

I do, and I plan on bundling with a Z730 board for that default overclock to like 5 GHZ
