Synergy "is it bogus"

Xenon54

I dont know what your worries are about synergy. It just lets you use your input devices on other pcs, quite usefull if you use a laptop next to your desktop.

It's a legitimate piece of software, if that's what you mean?

You have to authorise the machines you let have mouse/keyboard access to, so there shouldn't really be any security concerns. The underlying software uses VNC for signalling so it's fairly well vetted.

I have used it before a while ago. It works very well - however you will notice input lag on other devices depending on network.

Nothing to worry about except the price. It's based on an open source code. There are many free alternatives, or you can download previous versions for free

If all your systems are running Windows (XP and up), then you can get Microsoft's Mouse Without Borders, it is:

  • Free
  • Easier (and faster) to setup
  • and works better

The one thing to note is that if you get synergy 1, the basic version doesn't have encryption on your connection. This means that it's okay-ish to use in a home setting, but if your network is potentially open to others or if you're trying to connect over the internet your connection will be really insecure and easy to spy on.

Synergy 1 pro and Synergy 2 have encryption enabled, so it's not a worry if your systems are using one of these.

yeah its just a button on the bottom of the mouse, allowing to have 3 profiles/computers connected to the mouse and switch on the fly.

Only works on Bluetooth tho...

Last I checked it the mouse auto jumps from 1 screen to another. I think you are confusing things.

No, that's not it. Only the 2s has it.

Remembered it now, it's called Logitech Flow

This is just the 3 device switch which the MX Master has. Flow is on 2S, which the software communicates with the mouse to do the switching, and does like those multi-PC control software (Mouse Without Borders, Input Director, Synergy...)

No, that's just for using your mouse across 3 devices, but you have to physically press that button when you use your mouse from 1 device to the next. With Logitech Flow software, you do not need to press that button, it will easily glide your mouse from one device to the other.

Synergy is also free if you (LEGALLY) download the source code, which is publically available.

True. You do loose on encryption if you care about that (which I think you should). Microsoft solution and others like Input Director does have encryption (and well, still free.. just Windows only).

Anyway, my point is that: don't limit yourself with Linus sponsors, discover, they are possibly better solutions out there.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have upgraded to the stable version, from a beta and it does not work. I've tried to contact Symless about this through their website but the submit button at the end of the page doesn't respond. I can't seem to find any other way of contacting them so If anyone knows how to get in touch with them please let me know. Thanks

The submit button "works" for me. (When I say works it highlights required fields), it could be your browser disabling the script or just confused about it. Which actually happens quite a bit on chrome. Check the url bar on the right see if anything is there esp with a red x. The only thing that should exist there is fav icon and maybe a security icon, I'm on my phone.

If all else fails try this email: symless.com@domainsbyproxy.com

Which I got threw the whois lookup on godaddy (no idea why anyone uses them anymore...)
