Shitty hard drive speeds

cl4nk

Everything on my computer has been slowly becoming more sluggish and taking longer to load. I decided to do a benchmark which revealed everything on my pc was preforming "above expected".... except for my two hard drives. They are both 7.2k rpm and one I bought ~2012-2013 and the other is an old laptop hard drive. This is the result from the benchmark:

Any reason why this would happen / any tips for improving speeds?

Well as for the Laptop drive, all of them seem to perform really bad and that's to be expected from these kinds of drives.

The WD Blue not so much, you could Defrag it or just get an SSD

1) laptop drives are inherently slower than desktop drives, even if they're 7200RPM.

2) you're comparing a SATA3 drive to a SATA2 drive

3) you should always have ~10% free drive space so there's enough room for the drives' controller to move files around

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, RTX2060) Mobile: OnePlus 5T | Koodo - 75GB Data + Data Rollover for $45/month
Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9560 (the real 15" MacBook Pro that Apple didn't make) Tablet: iPad Mini 5 | Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 10.1
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 | Panasonic TS20D Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

That drive model is from 2009...  It's probably not nearly as fast as a modern 2.5" drive. o.O

I wasn't trying to compare them. My main concern was just that they are both "preforming way below expectations". Also I will try to clear us some space.

Yeah, so, if we dig up some actual reviews from when the drive was new in 2008 we see this:

Between abut 85-40MB/s write speed, depending where on the disc you are writing to.  So depending on how much free space you have, which would have a big influence on which area of the disc is now being written to for your benchmarks, your benchmarks would not be 'way below expectations' but rather 'Entirely within norms'.

Of course an ancient near max capacity drive will run poorly lol

Upgrade the drive with a new one. One of my 2 drives was benching low and it got replaced with a 2TB Firecuda recently.
