GTX 1060 6 GB + what CPU?

I'm on a really limited budget so which is the cheapest cpu that will never bottleneck the card?I will use the pc mainly for gaming.

You could get an i5 8400 or a Ryzen 1600 perhaps, both would leave you a socket that you can drop a better CPU into down the road if necessary, while giving you a great experience today

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

What games will you play?

For MMORPGs go with Intel i5 8400.

Otherwise Ryzen 5 will be great.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Budget/Country, Monitor resolution/refresh rate.

Did you already buy the GPU? Or anything? Do you already have a monitor?

Will ryzen 5 1400 bottleneck the gtx 1060 6gb ?

ryzen 1200 + b250 is the cheapest CPU+mobo that wont hold the CPU back, but DDR4 is expensive, a used haswell i5 might be the way to go.

Wont the 1200 bottleneck ?

You don't own anything yet? What's the full budget for everything then? As an RX 580 is likely a better option for free-sync

A quad core from 2014ish (Haswell Refresh, devils canyon) will pair with that perfectly.

Even my brothers older Intel® Core™ i5-2400 runs a 1060 6GB without holding it back. (1080P 60FPS, 2 Screens not that the amount of screens really matters)

An i5 2400 or upwards would be a good choice.

Going with 16GB's of DDR3 would be important, but 8GB's worked fine for him.. (Althrough PUBG likes to have more)

Sidenote:

I played some on that machine of he's and it plays all games nicely, GTA V, CS:GO, Unturned,PUBG,Minecraft,Roblox,Battlefield 4/1/Hardline.

All on high settings 1920x1080 while maintaining a solid 60 FPS. Only PUBG needed medium/low settings but that was due to the amount of RAM the system has. 8GB's really isn't something PUBG likes. It likes more, 12GB+ more.

ryzen 5 1600 oc to 3.7~ would be the best deal

the 1200 would bottleneck the card, the 4 core ryzens are in general, underwhelming.

you can also go with an old intel quad used.

Free-Sync is indeed something amazing, just keep in mind once you get used to it going back is hard.

Every time I use my laptop I find myself missing it, but after a while you get used to it.

Coming from an RX480 user, if the RX580 is as good (which it probably is). It is an amazing card.

Mine is a bit on the louder side, but tweak the fan curve (Mine is locked to 44% under load, never goes up in the high temps).

If possible the ASUS STRIX variants would be a great option they kick ass.

You also get an 8GB framebuffer, which can help in some cases. (Mine never fills up fully.)

Hate to bring it to ya, but the 1200 seems to hold its own.

More then one source seems to get good results when gaming.

Depending on pricing and whether OP wants to go used or not, it might be a good option.

those charts are comparing the lower end cpus, the 1600 isnt even in the tests. There are multiple posts indicating bottlenecking with the lower ryzen cpus.

Edit: just checked some charts, the ryzen 3 does bottleneck the 1060, but not too much, since budget is key.

The R3 1200/G4560/i3s are fine for 60hz gaming

not if its overclocked

Even at stock clocks, it will do fine for the price compared to other chips.

Just look at some benchmarks, keeping the prices in mind.

Spending more on a better chip doesn't yield dramatically better results.

If you get a solid 60FPS you are good, OP doesn't seem to want 120Hertz gaming so any extra frames are mostly lost.

Look at the second link I posted.

There is some bottle necking but you get 100ish frames instead of 120.

When you are at 60Hertz you will not even see the difference.

I always say that these kinds of bottlenecks are not really a bottleneck.

fair enough, but at that point, what are ur thoughts on older intel quads for the same price used compared to the ryzen quads?

I'd be in the NOPE camp. So that someone can get on AM4 and hopefully have upgrades until 2020, at least with a decent VRM.

That it doesn't really matter.

Power draw would be my only concern.

If you look at my previous post an Intel i5 2400 makes good use of the GTX1060.

But you'd have to go the used route, which I personally avoid for CPU's. (Especially for my main rigs)

Just get what draws the least amount off power and is the cheapest.

At this point Intel VS. AMD makes 0% sense.

(Just do not get the older AM3 bulldozer Quad cores, recent AMD chips only aka Ryzen)

You didn't answer the questions of what was your total budget, and if you needed a monitor with the new PC. As you likely shouldn't buy nvidia at all if you're in the US and buying a monitor with the PC, or are going to upgrade your monitor sometime soon.
