Not to get into a political debate but this isn't about whether or not he "needs" the money. That isn't the always sole determining factor for what a company does. Besides, Gates isn't involved in the direct operation of the company anymore and certainly not the XBox division. Anyway, it has long been Microsoft's policy that you need Gold to game online. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they did change their policy in regards to Gold being required for streaming services. It isn't just MS who requires a premium subscription to game online. Sony now requires you to have PS Plus in order to play online on the PS4. They do allow you to play some (or is it all?) F2P games without having PS Plus though. I actually think that it is the right decision for Microsoft because the Xbone fan base is so dedicated. Be glad that Netflix, Hulu, etc. are no longer behind that pay wall (those original required Gold as well). Playstation on the other hand does not have that requirement for playing online.
